DENVER -- Coors Field is usually known as a place for offense. This season, it's gaining a reputation for defense.
While the Colorado Rockies struggle at the plate and on the mound, their glove work has been outstanding. Although they're batting just .255 and are 17-24, last in the NL West, their .990 fielding percentage is the best in baseball and their 16 errors are a league-low.
"I don't think there are as many variables in the field," said second baseman Jamey Carroll. "You have more control of fielding than hitting. A ground ball is a ground ball everywhere, but different pitchers throw different pitches, so it's tougher to overcome the hitting."
First baseman Todd Helton's defensive prowess seems to be contagious and new center fielder Willy Taveras has provided a steady presence in the outfield.
"You don't look up and down their lineup and say 'there's a plus-plus defender' with anyone except Helton," said Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin. "But everyone in their lineup can pick it. And with (Taveras), there's a lot of ground to cover out there, he can do it."
Rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who pulled off an unassisted triple play this month, has combined with four second basemen to turn 45 double plays, tied for second-most in the majors.
Carroll, Omar Quintanilla and Clint Barmes have filled in at second, where Kaz Matsui has played just nine games because of a bad back.
Those four have committed just one combined error at the position all season. Tulowitzki has done his part as well, committing only five errors in 199 chances.
"It helps when you have guys like (Aaron) Cook out there," said Tulowitzki. "Cook throws sinkers and you want the ball hit to you."
Fellow rookie Chris Iannetta has also proved his worth behind the plate and he credits fellow catcher Yorvit Torrealba for helping him adjust to the major leagues.
"He's always taking the time to walk me through things like blocking pitches," Iannetta said. "Having him is a great asset."
Neither catcher has committed an error.
In the outfield, Taveras has helped keep opponents from hitting too many doubles in the cavernous gaps at Coors Field.
Acquired from Houston over the winter, Taveras is used to playing in unusually spaced outfields. It's 435 feet to straightaway center field wall at Minute Maid Park. Coors is a little shorter at just 415, but Taveras said tracking balls into the gap is much different in Colorado.
"Houston is longer, but any ball in the gap here could be a triple," Taveras said. "Longer is easier because straight into center you know you have a chance. But here a ball in the gap, you can kind of tell if it's going to get down."
