The NCAA had its beginnings in 1905. President Theodore Roosevelt and others were concerned about the many injuries and deaths occurring in college football. Roosevelt began the push for an organization to oversee college sports. He convened meetings with college athletics leaders at the White House and the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS) was formed, becoming officially constituted in 1906. The IAAUS became the National Collegiate Athletic Association® (NCAA) in 1910. Originally, the organization was a rules-making body. In 1921, however, it held its first national championship, in the sport of track and field. Since that time, more rules committees have been formed and today 87 national championships in 22 sports are held each year. In 1973, the association's membership (made up of colleges and universities) was divided into three legislative and competitive divisions (Divisions I, II and III). The NCAA began administering collegiate women's championships in 1982
