Wager Definitions and Rules
Football Betting and Basketball Betting. When you bet on a football or basketball game, you'll typically be playing against a point spread. 7 points will favor team A over Team B, for example. You'll either take Team A to win by more than 7, or Team B to lose by less than 7 or to win the game outright. It's important to remember that the point spread does not represent a prediction on the game from the sports book or casino, but, rather, a number that it believes will split the money evenly to reduce their risk.
Basketball Betting and Football Betting. When you bet a straight play, you have to risk your money in an 11/10 ratio (that extra 10% is called the vigorish, or the "vig" or "juice" in slang). You risk $11 to win $10 or $110 to win $100 or $55 to win 50, etc Ideally from the sports book perspective half the people wagering will take one team in a game, half will take the other then the sports book will make its profit from the losing side. Imagine that people wagering as a group risked $55,000 to win $50,000 on Team A, and $55,000 to win $50,000 on Team B. It doesn't matter who wins the sports book will pocket $5,000 in profit and use the other $50,000 from the losers to pay off the winners. All of this is important to you, because it means that for smart players, sports wagering is the best money making proposition in all of wagering.
Research for sports gambling. The laws of probability rule most casino games. The casinos know the laws and have adjusted their payoffs accordingly. For the most part, you have to get lucky to win in the casino. You can't purposely beat roulette any more than you can purposely hit the jackpot at a slot machine. But you can, through research and intelligence, beat sports point spreads. In other words, know the teams and the odds.
Point spreads. Point spreads are based on perceptions of the wagering public. Because the wagering public isn't perfect in its analysis there are holes that can be exploited each and every day. There are 7-point favorites who should be 10-12 point favorites; there are underdogs who have match-up advantages that will yield a straight up victory; there are good teams about to have an off-day, and bad teams who play over their heads in certain scenarios. This applies to all sports including Football and Basketball.
Baseball Betting and Hockey Betting in Comparison. Football and Basketball are similar in that they use point spreads. Baseball generally uses a money line. Hockey uses either a "puck" line (similar to a point spread but based on goals), or a money line like baseball.
Baseball Betting. Football and basketball are based on point spreads, which are the dominant method of wagering. Baseball, however, works a little differently. In baseball, betting odds are based on a money line instead of a point spread. Money lines make you pick the winner of the game, but the payoffs are based on odds. In a money line, the sportsbook posts the odds you have to risk to win $100. Your bet must follow that ratio regardless of how much money you want to put at stake. For example let's say a team is a 150 favorite. That means you have to risk $150 on that favorite to win $100, or $1,500 to win $1,000, or $75 to win $50. If you want to bet on the underdog to upset, you'll risk $100 and your return will either be 10 or 20 less than the posted price depending on the store.
Baseball Betting Odds. In baseball, the starting pitchers heavily influence each game's odds. When betting on a game, you can choose to bet one team against another team in the match-up regardless of the starting pitcher. You can also choose to specify one or both of the scheduled starting pitchers. If you want to specify pitchers to start you would be betting "listed" pitchers. This means that if the scheduled pitcher to start the game does not start, your bet is void. Because of the influence of pitching on a game many people will use this option. For example, Roger Clemens is scheduled to start against the Florida Marlins who have a terrible record hitting off him. You want to bet on the Yankees to win the game because you know Clemens will shut them down. You would then want to bet on the Yankees with Clemens as "listed". That way if for some reason Clemens doesn't start your bet would be void. On the other hand, if you think the Marlins are so bad that they can't win regardless of who starts the game pitching, then you would want to bet on the Yankees and have the pitchers "action". Your bet would then be good even if there were a change of starting pitchers.
The word “wager” has an actual definition of “the act of gambling.” It is also the word used to describe the amount of money used to gamble, and there are a variety of ways you can wager on your favorite sports or events. One of the most popular times in the United States for wagering is during football season. Avid betters continue wagering on the NFL throughout the season by a variety of methods. Sometimes betters use points picks, sometimes they wager on football pots, and sometimes they bet outright for the winners of the entire season. Betting on the NFL doesn’t stop there, however, and many gamblers like to bet on NCAA football as well. While NCAA football wagering isn’t as prominent, it often adds opportunities for betters that they can’t find with the NFL. And, the final bet, usually the most prominent and expensive bet of the season, occurs in football with Super Bowl wagers. This is almost the pinnacle for football betters.
Sports wagering doesn’t end with the local football pot or points picks, though. There are a variety of sports wagering sites on the Internet that allow true betting. This type of online sportsbook wagering allows you to not only place more bets against more people, which often leads to better or safer odds, but it also allows you to bet on a variety of sports and/or events. Many of the online betting sites offer wagering on tennis, wagering on the NBA, and more. Whatever sport you are interested in, and particularly those that you have vast knowledge about, can offer you a place to wager.
A very popular gambling venue is horse racing. There are many places that allow horse race wagering, including onsite at the track or on the Internet 24 hours a day. By doing your horse racing wagering online, you will be able to find all odds, as well as up-to-date news about the horses and the jockeys, which will help you make a better decision many of the sites that offer horse wagering not only let you know what type of odds and bets there are, but they also explain horse race wagering so that you aren’t jumping into something without being knowledgeable about the risk you are taking. This is important information to have before you place a wager, because there are many wagering cons involved in gambling. Being aware of these before betting can help you decide whether wagering of this type is right for you.
