A Note From Doc
Our company opened for business back in 1971. We were only one of a small number of sports handicapping services in existence at that time, and most of those have now fallen by the wayside. When you have been in the sports handicapping industry for more than 30 years, you definitely see some major changes.Click Here to read more.
Doc's 2007 AFC West Previewby Robert Ferringo - 08/25/2007
The AFC West is the NLL League in the NFL: No Love Lost. All divisional rivalry games in professional football are salty, bloody struggles. But they are particularly testy on the Left Coast. And this year will be no different. The Chargers are the clear-cut No. 1 team in this division and have goals beyond a second-straight AFC West title. However, after that there is a steep drop-off in overall talent and the fight for second place should be a cold-blooded one. Read more about AFC West Preview.
Possible Week 1 College Trap Linesby T.O. Whenham - 08/25/2007
After an offseason that seemed like it would never end, college football season is almost here. The season starts in earnest in less than a week - there are seven games to bet on Thursday, Aug. 30, and a full schedule follows over the weekend. Though it's incredibly exciting to have the season underway, it can also be a very costly weekend if we don't go into it with our heads in the right state. Read more about Week 1 Trap Lines.
2007 US Open Tennis Odds and Predictionsby T.O. Whenham - 08/25/2007
Tennis doesn't get the attention in North America that it probably deserves, and it certainly doesn't get as much attention as it used to back in the glory days. The next two weeks, though, are the one time when the American public pays attention to the little green ball. The US Open starts in Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday, and for two weeks tennis takes center stage. Even casual fans probably know that this is the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year, and it doesn't take an expert to figure what has happened in the first three, either. Handicapping New College Quarterbacksby T.O. Whenham - 08/25/2007
At the start of every college football season there is nothing that causes more frustration and confusion than young quarterbacks taking the reins at an elite program. You never know if a player is going to step in and shine from the start, or if he is going to take a few games to settle in and find his mojo. Plenty of money is lost each year by making the wrong assumption. The best solution, of course, would be to just avoid betting on any programs in this position until you know how the new general will command the troops, but where's the fun in that? Sometimes you feel like you have to bet on a game despite major quarterback questions. To help your decision making process at the start of this season, here's a look at five major programs looking at new faces and their chances of success early on: Read more about Handicapping New College Quarterbacks.
College Football Rule Changesby T.O. Whenham - 08/25/2007
Remember all of those college football rule changes at the beginning of the year? Remember how much time we spent trying to figure out what impact that they would have on the games, and consequently our handicapping? Forget about all of it. It turns out that the changes were merely a one-year experiment. Or rather, they were a bad, and completely unnecessary, decision that created all sorts of unintended consequences, so the NCAA did the right thing and tossed them out. Read more about College Football Rule Changes.

Doc's 2007 AFC South Previewby Robert Ferringo - 08/24/2007

Doc's 2007 NFC South Previewby Robert Ferringo - 08/24/2007
The NFC South might just be the most underrated division in football over the past six years. They have sent a representative to the NFC Championship Game in five consecutive seasons, and one of the four residents of this division has played for the right to go to the Super Bowl in eight of the past 11 years. Read more about NFC South Preview.
Hawaii Warriors Football - Buyer Bewareby Steve Kosmider - 08/24/2007
In 2005 Hawaii opened camp with the seemingly impossible task of replacing the NCAA's all-time passing leader, Timmy Chang. They began the year getting steamrolled by USC (63-17) at home. That particular Trojan team may go down in history as arguably the best college team ever. However, since that game the Warriors are 10-4 at home, with two of those losses stemming from non-conference foes. In fact, dating back to 2001, Hawaii is 37-10 on the island. That's not including a dominating 3-1 record in their semi-annual "Home Bowl" game, which, let's face it, is becoming a joke. Read more about Hawaii Warriors Football.
NFL Player Salaries for 2007by Joe Paciella - 08/22/2007
Jay Berwanger never sat in the green room at the NFL Draft. Chosen first overall and signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in the inaugural draft of 1936, Berwanger's rights quickly became property of the Chicago Bears. He asked Coach George Halas for a contract of $25,000 over two years. When Halas declined, Berwanger went on to work as a foam-rubber salesman. Somehow I don't see JaMarcus Russell selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door anytime soon. Read more about NFL Player Salaries.
The Advisory Board's Weekly Prescriptionby Doc's Sports Services - 08/21/2007
A splendid weekend for the veteran handicapper, as we collect with our MLB Game of the Year and a blowout victory with our NFLX Game of the Week. I must admit that last week's preseason games were much better to watch, as most of the starters played into the second quarter and the scoring increased because of that. The 'under' would have sent you to the poor house, as eight of the nine games on Saturday played over the total. Because of this, the oddsmakers have adjusted the totals for Week Three and you find a couple of 40+ point numbers in a few of the games. Read more about Advisory Board.
Doc's 2007 NFC West Previewby Robert Ferringo - 08/21/2007
I'm going to be completely honest with you - I have absolutely no idea who is going to win the NFC West. No idea. I can speculate. But that just makes me one of the bobbleheads. Much like Creationism, I truly don't believe there's anyone that can speak intelligently on the subject. And much like the 2008 Democratic Nomination, I would laugh in the face of anyone who said that they could predict the outcome with any certainty. Read more about NFC West preview.
Doc's 2007 AFC East Previewby Robert Ferringo - 08/20/2007
If the AFC East were the Jackson 5 then the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins would be Tito, Jermaine and Marlon, respectively. That would leave the Pats as Michael and Marty Booker as Jackie. The Jets are desperately trying to be the Patriots, only with half the talent. The Bills are in the eighth stage of a 27-stage rebuilding project that began at halftime of Super Bowl XXVIII. And Miami? TheyÕre still looking for an ample replacement for Jay Fiedler. I donÕt see how any of the three bastard brothers can make a playoff run in the stacked AFC. VSI's 2007 Surprise College Football Teams by Vegas Sports Informer - 08/20/2007
Every year there are one or two college football programs that leap out of the shadows and shock the national betting public. Last year it was Rutgers and BYU, who went a combined 18-5-1 against the spread while dazzling and surprising college football fans across the country. Being able to spot these teams before the books is a key to being a successful college football bettor. Read more about College Footbal Sleepers.

2007 NFC North Preview: Mutants, Weaklings and Bears - Oh My!by Robert Ferringo - 08/16/2007by Robert Ferringo - 08/16/2007
It basically breaks down like so: the NFC North teams are kind of like mutant babies born in Hiroshima in the years after The Bomb. They're deformed and missing limbs that most "normal" teams are not. DonÕt get me wrong; these organizations don't lack talent. But they each have PRONOUNCED vulnerabilities that make you wonder if their respective general managers had their ventromedial frontal lobes wilt and decay due to radiation. "Others Receiving Votes," Playground for Sharp Bettorsby Robert Ferringo - 08/12/2007
Others Receiving Votes. In college football, where the Almighty Polls are King, being in the Others Receiving Votes is simultaneously a proud achievement and a gross dismissal. It's a bit like flirting with a big-breasted blonde all night, getting some touches, but then not taking her home to close the deal and not getting her phone number. Close…but not close enough. How to Bet Round Robin Parlaysby Kevin Schweitzer - 08/12/2007
Raise your hand if you recognize this sequence of events: You've got $50 on a three-team NFL parlay. Your first two teams play early games and cover handily. Your third team plays Sunday night, and you have all day to think about how you're going to spend your money. Several nervous hours later, your team comes out and gets trounced. NBA Finals Historyby David A. Lane - 08/12/2007
Through the years, interest in the NBA Finals has steadily increased as the league has grown and become more international in nature. Certainly, dramatic performances made by key star players in the clutch haven't hurt the game's popularity at all. Watching two teams of the worlds greatest athletes compete against each other in this best-of-seven series for all the marbles has led to some very memorable match-ups since pro basketball's inception back in the 1946-1947 season. NCAA Football Polls Unduly Influence Point Spreadsby Robert Ferringo - 08/11/2007
There's an amazing symbiosis between polls and people in this country. On one hand, polling data alleges to reflect the national consensus through the science of random sampling. On the other, polls have an incredible power to influence the general public perception, sometimes even more than they "reflect" it. Read more about NCAA Football Polls.
Top College Football Gamesby T.O. Whenham - 08/11/2007
College football doesn't start for a few weeks, and we don't know much about how things are going to play out over the season yet, but it's way too tempting to resist to look ahead at the schedule to spot the must-see games that are coming up. Thanks to some aggressive sportsbooks we can not only look at these games, but also bet on them now. It doesn't matter that some of the games are three months and 11 games away - odds have already been set for selected high profile games. Read more about Top College Football Games.
49ers Deserve The Recent Hypeby T.O. Whenham - 08/11/2007
I enjoy being a bit of a contrarian sometimes, so it made me happy last year when I was very high on the 49ers and few people seemed to agree with me. They rewarded my faith by going a surprising (to others more than me) 7-9, and creating several high value and nicely profitable situations through the year. This year, despite the departure of offensive coordinator Norv Turner, I'm even more optimistic about their chances. Unfortunately, the public seems to have caught on to the progress and potential I saw as inevitable a year ago, and expectations have risen to such a point that the value may very well be bet out of the team, at least early in the season. 2007 MLB Top Money Teams: Run Line and Money Lineby T.O. Whenham - 08/09/2007
We're about 110 games into the MLB season, so we are at the point where we probably know as much about most of the teams as were are ever going to know. Since we are at that point, it makes sense to look at the teams that have been the most profitable so far on the run line and the money line. By seeing which teams are providing a nice return, and by understanding how they have done it, we can learn what has worked and how it can be applied to make the last 50 games of the year profitable. Post 756 Giants - a Solid Bet?by T.O. Whenham - 08/09/2007
Though the thought of Barry Bonds hitting home run number 756 and owning the most hallowed record in sports is disgusting to me on so many levels, I became resigned to it happening weeks ago. I just wanted it to happen so that I don't have to hear about it anymore, and so that every sporting event I try to watch isn't interrupted to show his every at-bat. In my mind, Hank Aaron will still be the true home run king, and all of this current mess will just be a bad memory. Read more about Giants After Record.
Tiger Does Not Offer Value in Tulsaby Joe Paciella - 08/09/2007
When Tiger Woods steps off of his private jet in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for this year's PGA Championship, he will be close to a 2-to-1 favorite to lift the Wanamaker Trophy at week's end. After dusting the field at the Bridgestone, it seems like this would be the time to bet on the world's No. 1, but hold on…here are a few reasons why you shouldn't. Read more about No Value in Tiger.
Handicapping the 2007 NFL Scheduleby Robert Ferringo - 08/08/2007
At the start of each season - before training camp, before preseason games, before fantasy drafts, and even before Sean Salisbury starts making completely obvious comments concerning the league and its teams (example: "Tom Brady just flat out gets it done." or "With Urlacher and that defense the Bears are tough to score against.") - I have a sort of betting ritual in regards to the National Football League schedule. While I do my preseason research, in which I backtrack through the injuries and free agent injections of each NFL team, I make a list of teams that I think will be overvalued and a list of teams that I think will be undervalued throughout the year. Read more about Handicapping the NFL Schedule.
Improving NFL Teams That Should Provide Valueby T.O. Whenham - 08/08/2007
When it comes to the records of NFL teams, I have a theory - a team can be decent and still only win six games because of injuries or other circumstances, but a team that wins five or fewer games either has real problems or just isn't very good. Last year there were six teams that fell under the six win barrier, and each, in there own way, was pretty bad. The Raiders were the true stinkers with just two wins.
Costa Rica real estateThe Lions were not far behind at three. Cleveland and Tampa Bay notched four victories, and Arizona and Washington both had five. Read more about Improving NFL Teams.
Most Important 2007 CFB Non-Conference Gamesby Robert Ferringo - 08/08/2007
One of my favorite elements of college football is the regional bias and regional jingoism that cultivates in hamlets and townships across this great nation. I mean, what's more fun than geographic stereotypes? We all know that southern schools are populated by nothing but racist hillbillies. Read more about Non-Conference Games.
Take the Emotion out of Handicappingby Gary Patrick Garry - 08/08/2007
Everybody says that they know that you should bet with your head, not your heart. But we have to stay ever vigilant to stick to this mantra. And even if we have the discipline to consistently play with our heads, there are those among us who do let their emotions get involved with their bankroll, and this is something that we as handicappers can use to our advantage. Read more about No Emotion in Handicapping.
Making Money From Baseball Props by T.O. Whenham - 08/07/2007
If you like betting baseball but can't get enough action to keep your juices flowing from just the run lines and money lines, then it may be time for you to branch out into more of the props that are available. The advantage of prop bets for some people is that you don't necessarily have to handicap an entire game and all the elements involved in doing that to make a successful wager. You can just focus on the relative aspects of the game, and that can allow you to make a decision more quickly. Read more about Baseball Props.

PGA Championship Odds and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 08/07/2007
The last golf major of the year is just around the corner. Every time I write a preview for one of the big tournaments I feel like an unoriginal moron, but I can't help it. There is no way that I can write about this tournament or any other without gushing about Tiger Woods, saying that he is deservedly the heavy favorite, then complaining that there isn't much value given the price. I may as well just write one article and then change the name of the course and the tournament as appropriate. Read more about 2007 PGA Championship Odds.

Important NFL Trends to Fatten Your Wallet by David Lane - 08/07/2007
When it comes to the NFL, winning bets can hinge greatly on a team's performance on such things as playing surface (grass or turf), stadium type (dome or open), and location of the game (home or away). There are statistics that track these different scenarios and they can show incredible trends regarding a particular team's success or failure. These facts can lead a bettor to some serious wins, even on big underdogs when they pick their spots correctly. Sorting through these stats for trends combined with an experienced eye for spotting a bargain is, as American Express says, "priceless". Read more about Important NFL Trends.
