The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional sports organization of hockey teams in Canada and the United States. It is the leading professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the major professional sports leagues of North America.
The National Hockey League was founded in 1917 in Montreal, Canada. After a chain of disputes in the Canadian National Hockey Association (NHA); between Edward J. Livingstone and owners of other teams, in due course it led to the establishment of the National Hockey League.
The founding teams were the Montreal Canadians, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs and the newly-renamed Toronto Arenas.
Even though, the league struggled to stay in business during its first decade, the NHL's teams happened to be very successful on the ice. The NHL's teams won the Stanley Cup seven out of the first nine years.
The league had also extended into the United States with the Boston Bruins in the 1924-25 season; the New York Americans and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1925-26 season; and the New York Rangers, Detroit Cougars (now known as the Red Wings), and the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1926-27 season.
In 1972, the World Hockey Association was created. Nonetheless, it never challenged for the Stanley Cup, its status as a potential competitor to the NHL rival did not go unnoticed. In response, the NHL decided to rush its own expansion plans by adding the New York Islanders and Atlanta Flames along with the Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals two years later. The two leagues fought for the services of hockey players and fans until the WHA folded in 1979. By 1997, the Oilers were the last remaining original WHA franchise still playing in the city where they began in the NHL.
Near the beginning of the 90s, the NHL extended further with five new franchises. The San Jose Sharks; a season later the Ottawa Senators would join the NHL along with the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 1993, the league added an additional two teams, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Florida Panthers. Near the year 2000, the NHL added another four teams: the Nashville Predators, the Atlanta Thrashers, the Minnesota Wild and the Columbus Blue Jackets completing a total of 30 teamsThe earliest known mention of baseball in the United States is a 1791 Pittsfield, Massachusetts bylaw banning the playing of baseball within 80 yards of the town meeting house.
The first team to play baseball under modern baseball rules were the Knickerbockers of New York City. The baseball club was founded on 1845, as a social club for the upper middle classes, and was strictly amateur until its disbandment. The club members formulated the "Knickerbocker Rules", which in large part deal with organizational matters but which also lay out rules for playing baseball. One of the significant baseball rules was the prohibition of "soaking" or "plugging" the runner; under older rules, a fielder could put a runner out by hitting the runner with the thrown ball. The Knickerbocker Baseball Rules required fielders to tag or force the runner, as is done today, and avoided a lot of the arguments and fistfights that resulted from the earlier practice of baseball.
Writing the baseball rules didn't help the Knickerbockers in the first competitive game between two clubs under the new rules, played at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey on 1846. The self-styled "New York Nine" humbled the Knickerbockers by a score of 23 to 1.Nevertheless, the Knickerbocker Baseball Rules were rapidly adopted by baseball teams in the New York area and their version of baseball became known as the "New York Game".
In 1857, sixteen New York area baseball clubs, including the Knickerbockers, formed the National Association of BaseBall Players (NABBP). The NABBP was the first organization to govern baseball and to establish a baseball championship. Aided by the Civil War, baseball membership grew to almost 100 clubs by 1865 and to over 400 by 1867, including baseball clubs from as far away as California.
The NABBP split into two groups. The National Association of Professional BaseBall Players operated from 1871 through 1875, and is considered by some as the first baseball major league. Its amateur counterpart disappeared after only a few years.
The professional National League of Professional BaseBall Clubs, which is still existent, was established in 1875 after the National Association proved ineffective. The emphasis was now on baseball "clubs" rather than baseball "players". Baseball Clubs now had the ability to enforce player contracts, preventing players from jumping to higher-paying clubs. Baseball clubs in turn were required to play their full schedule of baseball games, rather than forfeiting baseball games scheduled once out of the running for the league championship, as happened frequently under the National Association of Baseball.
A "gentlemen's agreement" was struck between the baseball clubs which endeavored to bar non-white players from professional baseball, a bar which was in existence until 1947. It is a common misconception that Jackie Robinson was the first African-American major-league baseball player; he was actually one of an unknown number. Moses Fleetwood Walker and his brother Welday Walker were unceremoniously dropped from major and minor-league rosters in the 1880s, as were other African-Americans in baseball. An unknown number of African-Americans played in the baseball major leagues as Indians, or South or Central Americans. And a still larger number played in the baseball minor leagues and on amateur teams as well. In the baseball major league, however, it was not until Robinson (in the National League) and Larry Doby (in the American League) emergence that baseball would begin to correct thisThere is much debate surrounding the actual origins of the game of baseball we see today. There are six professional baseball leagues dating back to the 1860’s that are recognized by the Special Baseball Records committee, only two of which are still currently in operation.
The modern era of organized professional baseball came to fruition and is historically recognized with the formation of the National League in 1876. Although some baseball historians believe that the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players created in 1871 is the true foundation of the professional leagues of today.
It should be noted that to be considered as one of these six founding professional leagues, they had to maintain consistent playing records and have had significant impact on the major leagues.
The modern game we follow today consists of the American League (founded 1901) and the National League. Two separate professional baseball organizations that were merged in 1903 to create Major League Baseball.
Due to intense pre merger rivalries, the two leagues operated under the umbrella of Major League Baseball, but for many years couldn’t be considered a cohesive organization.
Today we see The National League and American League playing as one professional organization. Although they remain separate leagues in theory, the rule variations are few and far between, and the teams now participate in inter league match ups
