FOX will have regional broadcasts of two of those on Saturday afternoon, the middle games of each series. In Detroit, it’s the reloaded Tigers hosting Central Division Rival Chicago. Detroit added third basemen Miguel Cabrera and left handed starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the roster this season among others and looks poised to take over control of the American League. However, they first need to win their division, and that task goes through the likes of the White Sox and Indians. In the other FOX broadcast, the focus is on the National League East, where favorites New York and Atlanta will do battle. The Mets added Cy young pitcher Johan Santana to the mix in the offseason and are a well-respected veteran club now seemingly capable of winning the whole thing. Santana is slated to make his second start in the Sunday game in Atlanta. The Braves are also loaded and ready for a return trip to the postseason in October. Some of the other great series’ on tap include Arizona visiting Colorado in a rematch of the NLCS and defending champion Boston crossing the northern border to take on Toronto.

There is the aroma of grilled food filtering throughout the parking lot, and the joy and anticipation of yet another campaign holds promise of a great season ahead. Major League baseball may no longer hold the same place in the hearts of fans is did two decades ago, yet the crack of the bat and pop of the catchers glove still is an enduring sound.
With the college basketball season down to a few precious games to determine champions in post season tourney’s and the NHL and the NBA winding down regular seasons before drawn out playoffs, Major League baseball offers bettors a chance at renewal. A fresh start for those enjoying the daily grind of working numbers, knowing a long winter in many areas of the country is coming to an end. Baseball wagering, probably more then any other type of wagering is like life, daily ups and downs, periods of good and bad, yet in the end, something wholly enjoyable.
Toronto at N. Y. Yankees 1:05 Eastern ESPN
This is the year of change in the Bronx. New leadership in the front office, a new manager sitting in the first base Yankees dugout after 13 seasons and historic Yankee Stadium, to be paid homage to one last time. Not everything is different, Alex Rodriguez returned to hold down third base and Deter Jeter, Jorge Posada, Bobby Abreu and Hideki Matsui all returned. The opening day starter is Chien-Ming Wang, who went 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA in 2007. The Yankees won 21 of his 33 starts last season.
Toronto has felt they were very close to competing in AL East, however injuries have undermined them the last two seasons and this spring other ailments could affect how they start. Today, hope comes in the form of Roy Halladay, who has won his last four decisions against New York and the Blue Jays are 7-1 against the Yankees when he starts since October of 2004. Toronto is a +140 money line underdog with total listed at Un9 at Bookmaker.com. The Blue Jays are 7-11 at Yankee Stadium the last two seasons.
Milwaukee at Chicago Cubs 2:20 Eastern ESPN2 The defending NL Central champions will have one last chance to end what would be a century of futility, raising a World Series championship flag, as the “lovable losers” of the North Side, as Chicago hosts rival Milwaukee. Manager Lou Piniella was brought in for one purpose, win. When asked about having the 800-pound gorilla on the team’s back, told his players this, “Don’t put the load of 99 years of not winning on you,” Piniella said. “Worry about this year only.” The Cubs have made several changes, adding Japanese import Kosuke Fukodome, Ryan Dempster to starting rotation and Kerry Wood as closer. The Cubs are a -120 opening day favorite with Carlos Zambrano, who is 0-1 with an 8.16 ERA in his past three openers. Milwaukee will look to take the next step as up and coming team, winning the division and getting into the postseason. Despite its late collapse, Milwaukee is coming off its first winning season since 1992 and still boasts one of the majors most potent lineups, with Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. The bullpen, which was a big part of the team’s late season failure, has been reworked, seeking better results. Ben Sheets get the opening day assignment and is 9-7 with a 3.87 ERA versus Chicago and went 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA at Wrigley Field in 2007. The Brewers were 6-9 against the Cubs in 2007, losing five of nine meetings at “the Friendly Confines”. San Francisco at Los Angeles 4:10 Eastern ESPN
It’s a beginning and an end for these bitter West Coast rivals. For San Francisco, it is life after Barry Bonds, moving in a new direction, with fewer distractions. The Dodgers who were a disappointing 82-80 in 2007, have a new skipper in Joe Torre. The former Yankees manager will have to adjust to life without a DH; however having a pitching like Brad Penny will make the adjustment easier. Penny was 16-4 last season and bettors collected +10.2 units in all his trips to the mound.
Penny will face Barry Zito, who could be accused of armed robbery after 4.55 ERA and the Giants losing 19 of his 33 starts. Zito is 0-3 with a 9.49 ERA in three previous opening day starts. San Francisco everyday lineup does not look any better than the one that lost 91 games a season ago.
The Dodgers are -170 favorites with total at Un8. Invariably, these games are always competitive, no matter the circumstances, as the Giants are 10-9 the last two years in Dodger Stadium.
L.A. Angels at Minnesota 7:05 Eastern ESPN2
Torii Hunter will be the opening day centerfielder in the MetroDome, which is not unusual, what is different he will be in Angels uniform, not the Twins pinstripes. He was brought in to add more punch to L.A. batting order, looking for another big bopper. The Angels are again figured to win the AL West; yet early season arm ailments to starters could signal problems. John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar are already on the DL, meaning Jered Weaver is taking the ball in Halos first ballgame.
Minnesota is a team in transition, with five new regulars in the field. Besides buying a program to find out whom all the new players are, Twins fans won’t see Johan Santana anymore either. “It’s a different group, and we’re just going to see how we break down,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Are we like locked in, solid go, together? Probably not. We’ve got a lot of things to learn about each other still. We’ve got a long ways to go here.” The same will go for baseball bettors, with the Twins +129 home underdogs. These two teams have split six games in the Land of 10,000 Lakes the last two seasons.
Houston at San Diego 10:05 Eastern ESPN2 The last game of the day has a team that could only wonder what might have been. San Diego lost the last three games of the regular season, than lost a playoff game to Colorado in extra innings, with Padres fans stilling waiting for Colorado’s Matt Holliday to touch home plate, despite being called safe. No point in living in the past for San Diego, having to move on, in what figures to be another competitive NL West. Jake Peavy certainly earned opening day assignment after winning Cy Young, leading the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA. “I’m excited about it,” said Peavy. “It’s always an honor to take the field and have a chance to play against one of my good buddies, Roy Oswalt.” Houston was 73-89 in 2007, including pathetic 31-50 on the road, dropping 15 units. The upcoming season doesn’t figure to show dramatic improvement, except for tonight. Oswalt is 7-1 when starting against the Padres with 2.39 ERA, with the Astros 8-1 overall. San Diego is -160 favorite, however has lost four of the last six at spacious Petco Park to Houston. The total is Ov6.5, with all six prior meeting going under the number.Need the latest odds?
