NBA teams are looking all over the world for tall shooters in the mould of Dirk Nowitzki, a two-time All-Star. Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Don Nelson talks about Nowitzki's pre-draft workout for the Mavs: "He was the most skilled person I ever saw at 19 . . . I'm not talking about Europe or other countries . . . I'm saying he was the most talented player I had ever seen at 19. More talented than Kobe (Bryant) or anybody else. At seven feet, he could do everything with the ball – handle it, shoot it and pass it." Nowitzki is known for his ability to shoot from the perimeter. He has increased his scoring over the first five years of his career, highlighted by a career-high 25.1 points per game in 2002-03. During the 2003 NBA Playoffs, he shot more than 44% from the three-point line. Like Nowitzki, George Gervin of the San Antonio Spurs thrilled Texas fans with his shooting and scoring. On the final day of the 1977-78 season, the "Ice Man" led Denver's David Thompson in the scoring race (26.8 points per game to 26.6 points per game). Thompson's teammates wanted their star to win the scoring title, passing to Thompson at every opportunity. He set an NBA record with 32 points in the first quarter. At halftime, he already had 53 points! Thompson finished with 73 points, the third-highest scoring single game total in NBA history. By hitting on 28 of 38 shots and 17 of 20 foul shots, Thompson raised his scoring average to 27.15 points per game. For Gervin to win the scoring crown, he would have to score more than 58 points in his final game of the season. Gervin scored 20 points in the first quarter and a remarkable 33 points in the second quarter, an NBA record. (Thompson's record for points in a quarter – 32 – lasted less than six hours!) Like Thompson, Gervin had 53 points at halftime. Early in the second half, Gervin scored six points, breaking the mark of 58 he needed to win the scoring title. He finished with 63 points, despite playing only 33 minutes. Gervin made 23 of 49 shots from the field and, like Thompson, 17 of 20 from the line. Gervin's average finished at 27.22 points per game, .07th of a point ahead of Thompson. Tip from the Pro: L.A. Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy has been a successful player (11 years in the NBA) and coach at the pro level, guiding the L.A. Lakers to the 1991 NBA Finals. Dunleavy is well known for his ability to work with young talent, from his own Clippers team to his son, Mike Jr., the number three pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Dunleavy's insight on shooting is as follows: "The basic set-up is very important before you shoot. The first thing you have to do is get your body square to the basket. Getting your body square sets up the rest of the shooting process. By square I mean you must have good balance with equal weight on each foot. "If you are a right-handed shooter, you want to have your right foot slightly in front of the left. If you are a left-handed shooter, put you left foot slightly ahead of the right. Either way, don't have the lead foot more than five inches in front of the back foot. "Once your feet are balanced, stick your butt out and put your head out over the ball. "You want to keep that follow-through (with your wrist) the same way every time. It should be the same on every shot. And lock in on your target with your eyes. I used to look at the back of the rim and really concentrate on that target. Some players like to concentrate on the front of the rim and others on the whole basket. Whatever you choose, lock in on that spot. "When you're ready to shoot, use your other hand as a guide. Remember, it's only there for set-up and balance. You are not trying to shoot with both hands. If the off-hand is too far in front of the ball or too far behind, it will be much more difficult to keep the shot going straight toward the basket. Practice each of these steps until it becomes routine."
