They might sign Daunte Culpepper. They might not. Either way, things are looking up for the Jacksonville Jaguars and their NFL betting fans.
The Jaguars are staring at a total of nine regular-season victories on the NFL Odds futures market, with the “over” priced as an underdog at +105. Ten wins looks like a strong possibility with what the Jags already have; now there’s the added opportunity for the team to grab a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Culpepper was finally granted his release from the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday; Jacksonville is the one team as of press time to publicly express interest in signing the free agent.
There are plenty of things to love about Culpepper: incredible athleticism and strength, a powerful running game, a strong and accurate arm, and star appeal among them. But there are caveats involved for anyone in the market for Culpepper’s services. The big red flag is his right knee. Culpepper tore up his knee badly during the 2005 season and never returned to form during his Miami tenure. There are also some questions about his character, stemming in part from the boat cruise scandal during Culpepper’s last season with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Jaguars appear ready and willing to roll the dice. They went 8-8 straight up and against the spread last year, failing to take advantage of the third-best defense in the league in terms of efficiency. Byron Leftwich was himself limited by injury, playing just six games last year. Although David Garrard was competent in relief, the Jags’ offense was driven primarily by their outstanding running combo of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. Adding Culpepper should improve Jacksonville’s ability to get the ball deep.
Garrard has already revealed that the Jags are indeed pursuing Culpepper; the plan, according to observers, is to start Leftwich and give him a few games to prove himself capable of hitting his targets. Culpepper would ostensibly be Leftwich’s backup, and Garrard may be looking for a new employer soon. This approach should appeal to Jags’ supporters, and would certainly have an effect on their pre-season NFL lines. Anointing Culpepper the starter right away would be a risky move for a club that played well enough last year to pick up 9.6 “estimated wins.” As a No. 2 option, Culpepper is more of an insurance policy.
It’s not a slam-dunk by any means that Culpepper will end up in Jacksonville. The Atlanta Falcons might also be looking for some insurance in the event that Michael Vick’s legal situation prevents him from giving training camp his full attention. Green Bay is also a possible destination, as the Packers look to a future without Brett Favre. But if you’re already of the opinion that the Jags are a 10-6 team with Leftwich, the chance that Culpepper will be in the mix should add to your confidence in taking the over.
