Chargers look to keep 6-Game streak alive at the dawg poundLost in the discussion of the best teams in the NFL is the fact that aside from the two undefeated teams’ 11-game winning streaks the second longest such streak belongs to the San Diego Chargers. At 8-3 the Bolts have one of the best records in the league and yet this team still seems to be little more than an after thought in most NFL gambling contender discussions. Which seems perfectly fine for the squad that hasn’t lost a game since early October.
NFL odds makers have made San Diego a 12-point favorite, which is an enormous spread for a road dawg and one that football odds bettors might want to take a look at. The Chargers are good, of that there is little doubt. And the Cleveland Browns (1-10) are very bad, of that there is no doubt.
But strange things can happen in the NFL. Despite being awful the Browns still played the Bengals and even the Vikings relatively close (until the end) and could certainly make this game closer than 12-points. This could also be a classic trap game for the Bolts as they’ll be looking ahead to the big time match up against the Cowboys the following week.
It’s hard to identify any one thing that this Browns team does well, or a facet of the game where they might outshine the visiting Chargers who have a potent offense and vastly improved defense. But both teams enter the matchup on six games streaks (Chargers 6-0, Browns 0-6) and the law of averages in this league are against any type of streak reaching seven games. Chargers are by far the superior team but the smart bet is on the Browns to at least cover this fat spread.
Philly limps into a crippled AtlantaNot since Sherman’s march on Atlanta has so much pain been inflicted Atlanta –at least its football squad. The once vaunted offense of the Falcons (6-5) has been decimated by injuries and it’s once probably playoff hopes are fading fast. A loss to an equally banged up Philly (7-4) squad in week 13 would all but bury the team’s post season hopes.
Both NFC playoff contenders, both named after birds and both with major injuries on offense this game could turn out to be a war of attrition in the NFL gambling odds. The one good thing Atlanta has in its favor is the home dome advantage. But that’s about the extent of it. Both defenses are sub-par and after strong starts have faded into NFL odds irrelevance.
This NFL betting matchup will boil down to which team can put more points on the board. When healthy both teams can score in spades. But neither offense is healthy and both could struggle. The major advantage of the Eagles is having starting QB Donovan McNabb healthy for this one. Big play threat DeSean Jackson is probably out as is elite RB Brian Westbrook. But Philly’s offense has proven it can still bust big plays with LeSean McCoy, Jeremy Maclin and others filling the void.
Atlanta will most likely be without QB Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner. In a game of major NFC playoff importance (both teams are battling each other for a wild card spot) only a crazy man are a diehard Falcons fan would bet on a Chris Redman led team. Pick Philly in what could turn out to be an interesting game.
Broncos keep up division title hopes in at ChiefsIt’s been a yo-yo couple of weeks for the Kansas City Chiefs (3-8). One Sunday you’re on top of the world after knocking off the defending Super Bowl champs at home and the next Sunday you’re humiliated in a blowout loss to division rival San Diego.
Week 13 isn’t likely to bring either of these extremes to the Chiefs at home but it will likely bring yet another NFL gambling loss for the team as they host the 7-4 Broncos at Arrowhead. Denver gutted out an impressive win on Turkey Day over what now appears to be a very mediocre New York Giants team. Still it was a tough win and it was exactly what the Broncos needed after dropping four straight games.
The Broncos are still just a game out of the AFC West title hunt and in the driver’s seat for the AFC wild card competition. The Chiefs are irrelevant in nearly every NFL odds way. And it’s also very shallow in the talent pool. Denver is a little banged up and QB Kyle Orton isn’t 100% but the team should still have more than enough fire power to overcome a weak Chiefs team.
The Chiefs got a good showing and a near 100-yard day from RB Jamaal Charles. But with a passing game in disarray a burgeoning running game will not be enough to shift the NFL betting balance in KC’s favor. The Broncos are favored by just a field goal in the early betting lines but they should be able to build a decent lead in this road game easily cover the spread.
Panthers at Jets
For NFL gambling enthusiasts week 12 is a fine week for turkey and great matchups. While there are certainly sexier games on the board this week like Saints vs Pats, or Steelers vs Ravens, this showdown between the Jets and the Panthers should take a backseat to no NFL gambling matchup this week.
Both of these teams are fighting tooth and nail to get into the post NFL gambling season and while both are long shots there is still reason for hope. The Jets started off the season the toast of the NFL odds but after rattling off three straight wins have struggled to get back in the win column (4-6).
The Panthers have also been a tough team to get a read on looking unstoppable at times, such a near win in the Super Dome vs the 10-0 Saints, yet at other times they’ve looked like junk. Also stuck on 4-6 and trailing the division leader by multiple games this is a must-win for the Panthers.
QB Jake Delhomme has been absolutely awful this season with just 8 TDs and a 66 passer rating. Fortunately the jets rookie QB, Mark Sanchez, has been equally awful with 10 TDs and a 61 QB rating. Needless to say, there won’t be a lot offensive fireworks this game, at least not in the passing department.
The key matchup will be the Panthers running game against the Jets run defense, both units are among the best at what they do in NFL betting but because the Jets have the home field advantage they’ll get the win on Sunday.
Upset alert: Bears at Vikings
In this classic NFC North matchup all signs point to a comfortable Vikings win. The Bears have been awful all season but they’ve been especially awful on the road and the Vikings seem to have no weaknesses. The early NFL football odds have the Vikings listed as 10 ½ point favorites and there is absolutely no good reason to believe the Bears will win.
Yet, for some reason this game has possible upset alert written all over it. True the Bears have lost five of their last six NFL gambling contests. True they are 1-4 on the road. But it’s also true that the team has lost its last two games by a collective eight points and could just as easily have won them both.
Jay Cutler has made plenty of mistakes this season especially in the red zone by tossing too many INTs. It’s true his receiving corps is awful, but they’re also due for one good game. This team has not played well in a very long time and Sunday could be the day they finally put it all together.
The key for the Bears will be to keep Jarred Allen out of Cutler’s face, very difficult to do. They’ve also got to account for Adrian Peterson on the defense (something that’s possible for a solid run defense team like Chicago) and keep Brett Favre in check (very difficult to do with a poor secondary).
The Vikings are the better team by a mile but this could be a classic NFL odds trap game with Favre & Co. looking ahead to two very tough games against the Cards and Bengals in the coming weeks. Smart money still says Vikes will win but look for the Bears to at least cover the NFL betting spread if not pull off the upset.
