Club Tijuana, is a professional football club that currently plays in the La Primera División A in Mexico. There have been many franchises brought to Tijuana, but never has such a serious project been seen in Tijuana as the one created with Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente.
Jorgealberto Hank is the eldest son of Jorge Hank Rhon. At 24 years of age, he is now the President of the team. He has announced several times that his short term goal and commitment is to ascend to the First Division. If this happens Jorgealberto Hank and Gog Alberto Murguia, the vicepresident, will be the youngest executives in the history of Mexican Professional football to be at the head of a first division team.The franchise was leased out by the owners of Querétaro FC to a gaming company called Grupo Caliente which operates out of Tijuana and is owned by former mayor Jorge Hank Rhon and Senator Alberto Murguia Orozco, Hank's business partner at Grupo Caliente.
Controversy surrounded the lease, due to the fact that the team would have ties to a company whose major business is that of betting on sports events, including football. The case was presented to high authorities in the Mexican Football Federation, where it was ruled that no action would be taken against Gallos Caliente or its parent company. This is because Grupo Caliente does not provide bets for the First Division A, the division the Club Tijuana is currently in. Moreover, it would not be the only football owner that would be associated with gaming. Grupo Televisa, the owner of the prestigious América is affiliated with sports gamingCurrently Club Tijuana's home is the new Estadio Caliente, located inside the Hipodromo, (Grupo Caliente's headquarters). It is the most central location in the city, which makes it very apt for a stadium. Jorge Hank Rhon made it known that this multi- million dollar project was not created simply for a Fist Division A team. Rather, it was created to give the city of Tijuana a first division stadium, and although the club's president has talked about the stadium being a future World Cup venue, it is impossible since FIFA's minimum requirement is a capacity of 40,000What first seemed like a hobby to the footbol aficionado Jorge Hank, has now been projected as a business and institution with many ambitious goals by his son Jorgealberto Hank Inzunza, President of Club Tijuana. The president has announced several times in press conferences that the project is far bigger than a stadium and a First Division team.
The business plan involves football schools and clinics throughout the region, including San Diego and Los Angeles, professional football training, talent recruitment squads; 1st, 2nd, and ,3rd division affiliates; foundations and green campaigns, and a heavily invested commercial complex.
Wirt Bowman was a self-described capitalist. He was also a turn of the century entrepreneur, speculator, casino owner, and one of the founders of the Agua Caliente Casino and Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico.
Born on March 28, 1874, he was the son of a Virginian Confederate cavalry veteran and expert telegraph operator who settled in West Point, Mississippi following the war. In 1887, the family moved to Childress, Texas, where they engaged in farming and ranching.(citation1)
In 1894, at the age of 20, Wirt Bowman became a telegraph operator and station agent for the Southern Pacific Railway. During his 18 years with the railroad, it was said that he worked at every station between Nogales and Guaymas, except for Santa Ana. (citation 2) On June 3, 1896, he married his first wife, Magdalene Bernaldo, in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. They had four children. He left the railroad in 1912 to devote his time to ranching in Nogales, Arizona, where he soon became an exceptionally successful businessman and politician. Bowman was a resident of Nogales for 51 years, and was responsible for much of its development and construction, including the Bowman Hotel and the Nogales Theater. He eventually owned the First National Bank, and was a principal investor in the Arizona Brewing Company in Phoenix, which offered Sunbru, the first bottled beer sold in Arizona when Prohibition ended. [1] Bowman also purchased large amounts of land in Arizona and southern California, particularly several noted properties in San Diego (including Rancho de los Penasquitos [2] and Otero Ranch [3]).
Bowman’s success in business was matched by his success in politics. In Nogales, he served three terms as a town councilman, one term as mayor, (1918-1919) [4] and one term as a member of the Arizona state legislature (1919-1920). He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York City in 1924, served as vice-Chairman of the Democratic State Central Committee in Arizona (1924), and served as Democratic National Committeeman of Arizona (1932-1940). He was appointed Collector of Customs for the District of Arizona by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943 (some say as a reward for party service) and served 2 ½ years. (citation 7)
Bowman was also extremely successful in business ventures across the Mexican border, where he owned the Foreign Club, a Tijuana gambling establishment. In 1928, Wirt Bowman, Baron Long (a California nightclub owner), and James N. Crofton (in the horseracing business) formed a company (“syndicate”) to build the $10 million Agua Caliente Casino and Hotel. [5] [6] Some sources note the fourth partner was Abelardo L. Rodriguez, Military Commander and Governor of Baja, and future President of Mexico. [7] The luxury Resort included casino, hotel, guest bungalows, championship golf and tennis facilities, Turkish baths, restaurants, nightclubs, and its own airstrip. The venture was enormously successful financially and particularly popular with Hollywood stars of the day, who were able to avoid Prohibition and other limitations by crossing the border. The $2.5 million Agua Caliente racetrack, which opened in December 1929, was equally attractive because betting on horse races was illegal in California at the time. [8] The world of casinos, gambling, and horseracing is often associated with organized crime, as well as “vice” crimes, such as prostitution. Some sources suggest that Bowman and his associates (dubbed "Border Barons" by the media) were also involved in these less legitimate enterprises in Tijuana, and imply that Bowman may have played a leadership role, thanks to his vast network of family and business associates on both sides of the border. (citation 11, 12) Bowman left Agua Caliente in 1934, just one year before Mexican President Lazaro Cardenas outlawed gambling, closed the resort, and turned it into a school.
In 1945, Bowman sold the First National Bank, resigned as president of the local chamber of commerce, and bought one of the largest cattle ranches in southern Arizona’s San Rafael Valley. (citation 2) He died of natural causes (a heart attack) on April 20, 1949, at the age of 75. He spent his last three years in Tucson, with his second wife, Teresa Bowman. [9]

The Agua Caliente Casino and Resort opened in June 1928 in the Mexican city of Tijuana, Baja California. It was a lavish resort that included a casino, spa, championship golf and tennis facilities, its own airstrip, and lots of entertainment. Stylistically, the resort was an amalgam of Mexican colonial, California mission, and neo-Islamic designs that ranged from mosaic minarets, to cozy guest bungalows, to steaming Turkish baths.[1] It was designed by 19-year-old architect Wayne McAllister and built by Baron Long, Wirt Bowman and James Crofton. Some sources note the fourth partner was Abelardo L. Rodriguez, Military Commander and Governor of Baja, and future Mexican President. [2] The $2.5 million Agua Caliente racetrack opened in December 1929.[3]
Drinking, gambling and horse racing were illegal in the neighboring U.S. state of California, so many wealthy Americans and Hollywood celebrities flocked to Agua Caliente. The actress Rita Hayworth was discovered there while performing in a show. The films In Caliente and The Champ were filmed on location there. The highlight of the opulent casino was the Gold Room, where patrons could only bet using gold chips, with a rumored $500 minimum wager.
Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed gambling in 1935 and closed the resort. It became a state-run school, Escuela Preparatoria Federal Lázaro Cárdenas and eventually fell into a sad state of disrepair. Remnants of the original buildings--the entrance to the pool, a minaret here and there--remain next to the Plaza Minarete strip center at the end of Avenida Sanchez Taboada. Although the casino and hotel were closed, the Agua Caliente racetrack continued to operate for many years.
