1. Look for horses that finished in the placing, that is first, second or third at their last four starts in their current campaign. 2. Include any non-placed run if it was within two lengths of the winner. 3. Last run must be on a metropolitan track unless it is a city standard horse. This little method will give you plenty of horses to check out and regularly comes up with some good winners.
Remember occasionally taking odds on about a horse is like putting your head in a hot oven. Regularly taking odds on is like putting your head in a hot oven and closing the door!
Always check and see what odds the TAB and bookies are offering and take the one, which will provide the best return. Horses that are true odds on's chances are generally very short in the betting ring, often odds on. You are very lucky if you can get better than 6/4. Of course there are also plenty of true 2/1 and 3/1 chances or even worse that are offered at 6/4 in the betting ring. Bettors generally take the short odds because they feel comfortable knowing plenty of money has gone on the horse. If they lose, many other bettors lose along with them. That is also why many media tipsters like tipping the short priced favorites. They know there is no value backing most of these horses, but because they accept that their tips are going to lose overall they want the comfort of being incorrect in the same way as most other judges. Specifying horses and races: It is the customer’s responsibility to monitor post times. All wagers are closed 2 minutes prior to post time.Horses are identified by saddlecloth number, not by name. Clients are responsible for their selections of both horse and race numbers. When you wager on a horse that is coupled, your wager includes all horses running under said number. If a horse is coupled with others, if you bet on any of them, you receive all horses running as part of the entry. If part of an entry is scratched, and part of the entry runs, all wagers have action. There is no “must go” action as part of the entry. If one of the entry horses runs, all wagers and bet types have action. Odds and Limits: All wagers pay full track odds, except Trifectas, Superfectas, Pick 3's, Pick 4's, Pick 5's, and Pick 6's. There are no house odds. If there are no track payoffs for a certain type of wager, all wagers on that type will be refunded. Scratches: If a horse is scratched, all Win/Place/Show wagers will be refunded and the portion of Exacta/Trifecta/Superfecta/Quinella combos that contain the scratched horse will be refunded. (Please see Rule #4 above regarding coupled entries.) All Daily Double tickets are paid out based on the official race results as published by the host track at which the race was run. Daily Double tickets are automatically refunded where the runner selected in the first leg of a Daily Double is a scratch. In the event of a scratch in the second leg of the Daily Double, if the host track pays a Consolation Daily Double (picked the winner of the first leg, but the selection for the second leg is scratched), such winning consolation payment should automatically be paid. If no Consolation Daily Double is paid by the host track, then Daily Double tickets selecting the winner of the first leg and a scratch in the second leg will be automatically refunded. All Pick 3 and Pick 4 tickets are paid out based on the official race results as published by the host track at which the race was run. There are no automated refunds of Pick 3 and Pick 4 ticket parts when any runner scratches. Normally, scratched runners are included with the winning runner IF the post time favorite wins the race. In the event a scratched entry is not included with a winning post time favorite in the official track results, and the other runners selected for each leg on the ticket are winners, please contact Bestline Sports Customer Service and the ticket part will be refunded.
Match-ups: In matchups between two or more named horses, all horses must go for wagers to have action. Matchups are determined by horse name. Any track entries coupled are irrelevant towards determining the winner of a matchup. In matchups between one named horse and the Field, wagers will have action if and only if the named horse starts. Scratches of horses in the field will not affect the standing of the wager. The winner of a matchup will be determined by the highest placed finisher involved in the matchup. If no horse finishes, the matchup will be graded “No Action”.

Horseracing Board
Horse racing in the United Kingdom is generally of three types, and is a major contributor to the UK economy. Horse racing can be over fences or over hurdles, known as National Hunt racing, or unobstructed distances races, known as flat racing. Additionally there is another form of racing which is run on an altogether more informal and ad hoc basis, known as point to point racing. Point to point is a form of steeplechasig for amateur riders. It, like professional racing, is nevertheless run under the auspices of the regulator for horse-racing in Great Britain, the Jockey Club, which works in conjunction with the governing authority, the British Horseracing Board. The UK has produced some of the greatest jockeys, including Sir Gordon Richards, usually considered the greatest ever jockey. There are about five hundred British professional jockeys [1] It is thought that the first races to take place in Britain were organised by soldiers of the Roman Empire in Yorkshire around 200 AD, although the first recorded race meeting was during the reign of Henry II at Smithfield, London in 1174 during a horse fair. It is believed that the first occurrence of a trophy being presented to the winner of a race was in 1512 by organisers of a fair in Chester and was a small wooden ball decorated with flowers. Early in the 16th century Henry VIII imported a large number of stallions and mares for breeding although it was not until the 17th and 18th centuries that the breeding of thoroughbreds began as we know it now. Newmarket is known as the home of horse racing in England and James I was prominent in introducing racing there after discovering the little village in 1605 whilst out hawking or riding. He spent so much time there that the House of Commons petitioned him to concentrate more of his time on running the country. This region had a long association with horses going back to the time of Boudica and the Iceni. Around the time that Charles I of England came to the throne, Spring and Autumn race meetings were introduced to Newmarket and in 1634 the first Gold Cup event was held. All horse racing was then banned in 1654 by Oliver Cromwell, and many horses were requisitioned by the state. Despite this Cromwell himself kept a stud running of his own. With the restoration of Charles II racing flourished and he instituted the Newmarket Town Plate in 1664, writing the rules himself: In the early 18th century, Queen Anne kept a large string of horses and was instrumental in the founding of Royal Ascot where the opening race each year is still called the Queen Anne Stakes. In 1740, parliament introduced an act "to restrain and to prevent the excessive increase in horse racing", though this was largely ignored, but in the 1752 the Jockey Club was formed to create and apply the Rules of Racing. Racing has stayed pretty much the same since with the Jockey Club combining with the National Hunt Committee in 1968 and remain to this day the regulators of racing in the United Kingdom, with the British Horseracing Board, (formed in June 1993) responsible for strategic planning, finance, politics, race planning, training and marketing.
