Ridden by Calvin Borel, trained by Carl Nafzger and owned by Jim Tafel, Street Sense covered the 1 1/4 mile distance of the Derby in 2 minutes and 2 seconds on a track labeled fast. It was the first Derby win for Borel and Tafel and the second for Nafzger, who won the 1990 renewal of the classic with Unbridled. Street Sense was able to overhaul frontrunner Hard Spun, who led most of the way. Those two horse were well clear of third-place finisher Curlin, a previously unbeaten colt who was making just the fourth start of his career. "I knew I had the ability. It was just a question of getting the horse to get me here," Borel said of his first Derby victory. "My horse had a tremendous turn of foot. I could do whatever I wanted with him. I felt like I had a bomb." The crowd of 156,635, the third-largest in Derby history, made two-year-old champion Street Sense the lukewarm favorite at 9-2. In what turned out to be one of the most wide-open and difficult to handicap races in Derby history, only four of the 20 horses went off at odds of less than 10-1. Street Sense paid $11.80 to win. His payday of $1.45 million for the Derby brings his total earnings to just short of $3 million. "This is the one everyone wants, including me," said trainer Todd Pletcher, whose five entrants in the Derby matched a record. His best showing this Saturday was a sixth place finish for Circular Quay. Pletcher has saddled 19 horses in the last seven Derbies without a win. Sky Conqueror, ridden by Javier Castellano, brought home $330,430 for his owner William Sorokolit Sr. and trainer Darwin Banach. Take the Ribbon, a four-year-old filly ridden by Rafael Bejarano, captured the $150,000-added Churchill Distaff Turf Mile over a yielding turf course. The filly's connections, owner Eurowest Bloodstock and trainer Wallace Dollase, earned $103,138 for the victory, the third in 10 starts for the horse. Bejarano also rode Saint Anddan, a five-year-old horse, to an upset win in the $250,000-added Churchill Downs stakes on the dirt track. Trained by Bobby Frankel, the winner paid $18.40 and banked $170,485 for owners Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warner Jr. It was the fifth win in 13 starts for the horse, who has won two of three times he has raced over the Churchill strip. And Bejarano notched his third big stakes win of the day aboard Hystericalady in the $300,000 Humana Distaff. Owned by Rancho San Miguel, George Todaro and Jerry Hollendorfer and trained by Hollendorfer, the four-year-old filly earned $200,732 for her sixth victory in 10 lifetime starts. Silverinyourpocket blew past the field and then held off a late charge from Suaveness to win the 52nd running of theLa Troienne, a race for three-year-old fillies. Ridden by Calvin Borel, Silverinyourpocket won for the third time in five starts and pocketed $107,703 for owners Mr. and Mrs. R. David Randal and trainer Helen Pitts. The dirt track had been upgraded to fast for the La Troienne and remained that way through the Derby.
