The AP Standings are your greatest looking glass into the future of the NCAA football bowl season. The USC Trojans, who began the season at number one, retained their top seed by beating Idaho 38-10, but the victory was uninspiring to the voters. The LSU Tigers stayed pat behind the Trojans at the number two spot as well.
Obviously, the biggest headline of the weekend was Appalachian State’s unbelievable upset of the fifth ranked Michigan Wolverines. With two blocked kicks and a final score of 34-32, the double-A school rocked the AP Standings by knocking Chad Henne and the Wolverines out of the top-25. Suddenly, Michigan’s +180 to win the Big 10 doesn’t seem so favorable.
The Wolverine’s may still have hope, albeit slim hope, because most pundits around the nation revere Appalachian State as a very talented football squad. But hopes of a BCS bid are essentially dashed for the Michigan hopefuls. Unless something traumatic happens to the five best teams in the nation, Michigan will never recover from one of the most stunning upsets in college football history. At least not this year.
The California Golden Bears finally got revenge on Tennessee as they won 45-31 in an exhilarating game. The tone was set when Erik Ainge fumbled the ball after getting hit by a jumbo jet posing as a defensive lineman, and Worrell Williams scooped up the lost ball and returned it for a 44 yard touchdown. Tennessee suffered a free fall from fifteenth to twenty-fourth, while California rose from twelfth to tenth overall. If California maintains the tempo they set in week one, their +200 odds to win the Pac-10 are certainly worth a look in our NCAA football sportsbook.
Oklahoma caught the eyes of the voters by serving North Texas with a heavy dose of Sooner pride, lighting the scoreboard for a 79-10 victory. Sam Bradford’s debut at quarterback was highlighted by going 21/23 for 363 yards and three scores. The betting faithful should continue to back the Sooners at +180 to win the Big 12, especially with Texas stumbling backwards to seventh in the AP rankings.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish failed to support their bid for a top-25 ranking by losing in spectacular fashion to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 33-3. But there is a silver lining, it’s just not for the Irish. Georgia Tech broke in to the top-25 at twenty-first overall.
The defending champion Florida Gators and Wisconsin Badgers moved up two spots each, but that was more by default. They both played well and flashed championship caliber play, but nobody should read too much into their move upwards. Their rise has more to do with Michigan’s shaking fall.
The team to keep your betting crosshairs on is Virginia Tech which rode an emotional wave of sentiment to overcome some miserable first half play against East Carolina. V-Tech remains the favorite in the ACC at +175, but they face number two ranked LSU this weekend in what will be a massive test of their fortitude. If they lose, keep an eye on twenty-first ranked Georgia Tech and twenty-fifth ranked Clemson, who have favorable odds in our NCAA football futures to earn tops in the ACC.
USC, LSU, West Virginia, Florida, Oklahoma and Wisconsin (who are tied) sit atop the AP rankings and voters are giving attention to newcomers Clemson and Georgia Tech. Both Michigan and Notre Dame should remain on the outside looking in, but as a smart college football better, check back to the BetUS Locker Room to use the weekly AP rankings to try and get a jump on some attractive NCAA football futures.
