The talk of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis is Cowboys owner Jerry Jones: How in the world could Jones have so overestimated the desperation of Terry Donahue to get the Dallas head coaching job?
Donahue felt he could stand Jones' intrusions into the coaching side of the job; but Jones' offer to Donahue would have made him the NFL's lowest-paid head coach, at $500,000 a year. Sources tell me that Jones told Donahue to think of all the money he could make after retiring from the Cowboys as the former coach of one of America's marquee teams. Donahue, wisely, wasn't buying the argument or the contract.
Jones may rekindle the Donahue talks if he's willing to pay his coach a middle-of-the-NFL-coaching pack million a year. Meanwhile, Green Bay offensive coordinator Sherm Lewis, who left Dallas a week ago thinking he'd get the job, is befuddled. As of Friday morning, it had been 72 hours since he'd heard a word from the Cowboys, and it's obvious they've put him on the back burner to consider college coaches.
The buzz at the combine is that one of those who Jones fleetingly considered this week, incredibly, is rookie Illinois coach Ron Turner, the offensively like-minded brother of Redskins coach Norv Turner. One problem, Jerry: Ron Turner's Illini went 0-11 in 1997.
Never say nevermore in BaltimoreEven though Jim Kelly will be 38 on Opening Day, there are three reasons why it's a near-lock the Baltimore Ravens will sign him in the next month and cut incumbent Vinny Testaverde in June, when his salary-cap hit will be tolerable.
1 -- The Ravens think they're closer to Super Bowl contention than most sane football followers do. And they think a year or two of Kelly's fire and no-huddle newness will take them further than Testaverde's bland leadership and failures in the clutch.
2 -- The Ravens don't think they can get any of the three quarterbacks they like more than Kelly. To move up in the first round to get college studs Ryan Leaf or Peyton Manning would cost too much. They like Jacksonville's Rob Johnson, who will be on the block for a first-round pick because he's due to enter free-agency next year -- but the Jags would almost certainly not trade him within the AFC Central.
3 -- Kelly running his own show is a good gamble, even at 38. When the Buffalo staff called the Bills' plays over the first 10 games of 1996, Kelly's quarterback rating was 59.5. Then Kelly wrested control of the play-calling, and his rating rose to 90.5 over the last six games.
It's a risk to bring Kelly out of mothballs, but don't underestimate owner Art Modell's thirst for instant answers and heroes to revitalize his team.
A few quick notesIn Arizona, the Cardinals are breathing a sigh of relief over their star pass-rusher, Simeon Rice, quitting basketball. Rice had only five sacks in 1997 after playing minor league basketball in Fort Wayne and neglecting his football workouts. Now he'll do the off-season stuff he needs to do to be a double-digit sack man again.
In Minnesota, the reign of error of the worst owners in the NFL is almost over. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue will mediate the dispute between the team's prospective owner, novelist Tom Clancy, and current club president Roger Headrick, who believes he had the right to match Clancy's $200 million offer. There's such hostility now between the two sides, Headrick tells me, that he's not sure his expenses here at the combine will be paid if he doesn't win control of the team.
In Baltimore, the Ravens would like to replace substance-troubled Bam Morris at running back with Tampa Bay free-agent Errict Rhett, who will be a reasonably priced second-tier running back.
The shame of the NFL continues. The four black coaches in NFL modern history have won a collective 57 percent of their career games. Does it matter? NFL owners have hired 18 white coaches in succession, stretching over 25 months.
