The History Of The Preakness StakesMaryland’s chief executive and several friends visited Saratoga in 1868 several years after America’s oldest track opened. Gov. Oden Bowie and other prominent racing figures attended a dinner party where they pledged to build a track in their state if a special race for 3-year-old colts and fillies was run in two years. In 1870, the Dinner Party Stakes was launched at Pimlico. Three years later, a new race was introduced for sophomore colts and geldings honoring the inaugural Dinner Stakes winner – Preakness. On a warm, muggy May 27, seven horses went 1 ½ miles before a crowd of 12,000, two years before the first Kentucky Derby in 1875. First across the finish line was Survivor, who stormed home by 10 lengths, the largest margin of victory for 13 decades until Smarty Jones cruised to an 11 ½-length victory. The Preakness prospered for 17 years until Pimlico went dark in 1890 and the race was shifted to Morris Park in New York. For the next 15 years, it was staged at Gravesend racetrack in Brooklyn. The race returned to Pimlico for good in 1909 when several of today’s traditions were born. The musical rendering of “Maryland, My Maryland” is attributed to a bugler that began playing and was joined by the entire band that was enthusiastically welcomed by the crowd. While the words were penned as poem in 1861, it wasn’t adopted as the state song until 1939. That same year the Maryland Jockey Club commissioned an ornamental ironworker to forge a weather vane in the form of a horse and rider that was painted the colors of the silks for the winning Effendi. The Preakness was staged 11 times before the Derby and 11 times prior to the Belmont. Twice it was run on the same day as the Derby, 1917 and 1922, and once on the same day as the Belmont, 1890. The Preakness has been held every day except Sunday: Monday, 6 times, Tuesday, 14; Wednesday, 5; Thursday, 4; Friday, 13; and Saturday, ever since 1931 when the current order of the Triple Crown races began. The largest on-track crowd was in 2007 when 121,263 saw Curlin defeat Derby champ Street Sense by a head, equaling the track record of 1:53 2/5 for the 1 3/16 miles. Many a black-eyed susan, the flower (sorta), has been draped across the shoulders of winners since 1940 when Bimelech triumphed. That was 22 years after being declared the state flower, which features the state’s black-and-yellow colors. But since the black-eyed susan doesn’t bloom in Maryland until June, another flower is substituted. More than 80 bunches of Viking daisies are strung together on a green base and the centers are daubed with black lacquer to recreate the correct appearance on an 18-by-90-inch blanket. Black-eyed susan, the drink, was developed for a special Preakness commemorative glass created in the early 1970s, but has the main ingredients have changed through the years. During that decade vodka, rum and triple sec shared equal billing. But the souvenir glasses became so popular that the drink could no longer be mixed one by one, bartender style. In the 1980s, peach schnapps replaced triple sec. The 1990s saw bourbon replacing all other hard liquor. racing traditions for horse betting it must be noted that . NFL Picks। Handicappers. Free. wager on College Football
The first few weeks of the college football season are always full of unknowns. There are new head coaches, new coordinators, and most importantly hundreds of new players on teams who are filling key roles for the first time. No one yet knows which teams will be the big surprises or big disappointments; the only thing certain is that there will be several. It is this time of the season, namely the first three weeks, that the oddsmakers have the toughest time putting out accurate line predictions. It may not be easy for handicappers to identify which lines are off, but just being aware that there will be more mistakes now than at any other point in the season can give you an advantage. Firstly, if you like a 10 point or fewer underdog in a game consider playing a portion of your wager on the money line. Split your wager in half for smaller spreads while putting 10-20% of your wager on the money line for the bigger spreads. This strategy is something to consider in all college underdog wagers, but even more so early on in the season. Secondly, and this is probably my most effective early season strategy, focus some attention to second half betting. Try to identify key unknowns and question marks before the game, such as the ability of a new quarterback or which team will control the line of scrimmage. Often times these question marks can be answered in the first half and enable you to make a smart second half wager on a second half pointspread that is formulated in part by an original line that was set when the key question marks were still a mystery. It may take some time to get used to second half betting, but it can be very rewarding, particularly early on in the season. Stiff competition abounds for first 2007 Montessori Award
September 6, 2007
(Editor's note: The Montessori is awarded to the head coach whose team displayed the lowest degree of adult supervision and the highest degree of disorganization and overall incompetence on the college football landscape the previous weekend.)
After the first weekend of college football 2007, our heads are spinning here at the CFG. The wide selection of coaches who underachieved has provided us with a wellspring of candidates for the year's first Montessori Award.
First, there was the bumbling incompetence of Mack Brown and his Keystone Kops of Koaching in Austin. Mack's staff somehow managed to be outcoached and outperformed coach Steve Roberts and his Arkansas State Indians. The Indians passed further and ran faster than the Longhorns as they threw a huge scare into the double-digit favorite Texas team before succumbing 21-13. The game left more than one Arkie State player publicly stating that they'd love another crack at the Longhorns.

Smith's Picks September 5, 2007
***
Last week's slate of games ran the gamut from the improbable (Georgia Tech sissy-slapping Weis-Worst around under the disapproving glare of Touchdown Jesus), to the unlikely (Clemson running their winning streak against Florida State to three straight), to the darned-near impossible (Appalachian State's keelhauling of the Wolverines), to the sublime (did I mention the Appalachian State - Michigan game?).
In short, last weekend's gonna be a tough act to follow. However, the planets do appear to be in alignment for another set of interesting head-to-heads across the landscape. And while we can't promise another upset as monumental as you-know-who over you-know-who-in-Maize-and-Blue, you can rest assured there will be more surprises.

Nebraska (-8 ½) at Wake Forest. Oh what a tangled web Bill Callahan has woven since he took over in Lincoln four years ago. In that time he has managed to lead the Huskers to their worst season since the Kennedy presidency, alienate old and respected rivals, and run off some of the most highly regarded blue chip athletes on campus. But now, the sports press in the great state of Nebraska would have us believe that after a 52-10 skeet shoot against the Nevada 'Wolf Pack' (the nickname is being reconsidered as this article goes to press), that all is well in the land of wheat germ and honey. Now that Sam Keller has been transplanted from Arizona and seems to have taken root in the fertile Nebraska soil, all of a sudden the unrelated defensive problems that have been so prevalent the last few seasons have dissipated and the mental errors which contributed such a large role to so many depressing defeats suffered at the hands of so many opponents since 2004 have been somehow conjured away. But not so fast, there, Herbie. Offensive coordinator and Nebraska favorite Jay Norvell has moved on to UCLA and TE coach Shawn Watson has been promoted to OC. Only time will tell how effective this will be. But Kevin Cosgrove is still the defensive coordinator at NU, a situation that should be perceived as a positive for all Husker rivals. Meanwhile, much has been made of Wake quarterback Riley Skinner's 'partially dislocated shoulder.' In football parlance, 'partially dislocated' should be translated to 'will play.' And we should mention that WF only allowed a grand total of 54 rushing yards to Boston College last weekend. Even without Skinner, The Wake home crowd should 'wake' up the Deaks. Huskers by 3
