Okay, so Santa Anita may or may not run the Sunshine Millions Classic tomorrow because of the rains that have hit SoCal this past week. I’m hoping that they do and will write this article as if the race will go off as planned. No such worries regarding the Distaff where the sun is expected to be out at Gulfstream Park in Florida this weekend.
Sunshine Millions Classic
Santa Anita Park - - Arcadia, CA
1 1/8th miles on Cushion Track
The class is obviously Monmouth monster Gotcha Gold, but the cushion track means that a long-shot should be looked at in this affair. Gotcha Gold, as good as he is, will face a lot of pressure up front from Bilo and Now Victory. That pressure should make Gotcha Gold wilt in the final length. Because of that I’m going with closers in this race. The first is the Bill Mott trained Go Between. My hope is that Go Between does not go off the favorite in this face as he is the classiest animal. Go Between has won a Grade III on the grass. That’s about as good as it’s going to get in this affair unless you believe that Buzzard’s Bay can return to his Grade I status. After Go Between, my money will be on Electrify. Electrify can be dominant at times, but he will have to prove that he can take his A game away from the comfy confines of Calder Racecourse. If he does, then he definitely has a good chance against these. For third, I’m going to put my dollars on Diamond Stripes. Stripes will have to turn his form around big time in this race, but he has the trainer, Richard Dutrow, and the back-class to do it.
1. Go Between
2. Electrify
3. Diamond Stripes

1 1/8th miles on the Dirt
This race is all about Ginger Punch, right? Well, yes. She’s the absolute class of this race, comes from the Bobby Frankel barn, and can either stalk or close. Unless she drops the jockey, Ginger Punch will win this thing by open lengths. Easy money for Frankel and company and easy money for handicappers. Now, all we need are the two long-shots to finish up the trifecta. I sort of like Lost Etiquette. First, her odds are going to be terrific. Second, this will be her first start with Steve Asmussen. Let’s give her runner-up honors. For third, I’m going with Curiously Sweet. This filly could improve going from cushion track to conventional dirt. Why not? Has been running out in SoCal. Now, she gets to get herself out of the rain and take on the gals in Florida.
1. Ginger Punch
2. Lost Etiquette
3. Curiously Sweet
