Like most games that have been around for centuries, there are rumors about where Roulette actually originated but the most known history of Roulette is that of its French origin.
Around the 17 th century it is said that a French Mathematician named Blaise Pascal invented a game using a small wheel (or “roulette” as it is called in French) due to his increased fascination with perpetual motion.
Pascal invented the wheel to have 36 numbered slots but a few years later, with the increased popularity that Roulette had gained in France, some fellow Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc decided to create an extra slot holding a zero in order to achieve a house advantage.
By the time the game got to the US it was extremely famous all around Europe and gained equal popularity in the US where a “ 00” was created to further increase the House advantage. Roulette's popularity has gained it its nickname the “King of Casino Games”.
The most interesting rumor by far behind roulette is its supposed link to the devil. Rumor has it that Francois Blanc actually made a pact with the devil himself when he started opening up casinos in Monte Carlo so that the game would be as famous and as popular as it is today. Some people really believe this story because if you were to add up all the numbers of the Roulette wheel together they equal “ 666” which is believed to be the number of the beast. It is believed that Roulette has been around for thousands of years. Although no one can show an exact date, it is known that the ancient Egyptians played some form of Roulette. In time, this ancient game moved to 16th century France, and became a popular game amongst the peasant class.
There are also whispers that the Chinese played an ancient form of Roulette. This game was brought to Europe through trade with the Orient. It could well be that both of these histories have some truth and once coming to Europe the game intermingled to become what the Middle Ages Europeans came to know as their form of Roulette. It would not be surprising if one day archaeologists discover the first wheel, only to find the etching of Roulette numbers next to each spoke!
Casino Roulette in EuropeIn the 17th century, a French philosopher, mathematician, physicist and religious philosopher, invented the modern Roulette wheel. Interestingly enough, he came about this invention, not through his love of gambling, but rather for his fascination for objects in perpetual motion! Although he invented the modern Roulette wheel in the 17th century, the modern game of Casino Roulette only came into being almost 200 years later!
In the 18th century, the British played a few games that seem to have some relation to Roulette, however they do not constitute what is looked upon as the "real" Roulette! By the end of the 18th century, early versions of the game, which included both the single and the double zero, were also being played in casinos in Paris.
In 1842, the Blanc brothers, Louis and Francois, created the first modern day Casino Roulette wheel in France. Their part in the story of Roulette made them legends in the history books of gambling. They created the single zero Roulette tables, lowering the house advantage by 2.6 percent! These men were also the ones who made Roulette known throughout Europe and the United States! As gambling became illegal in France, the brothers introduced Roulette to Germany. Soon enough, the Royalty of Monaco invited François to bring Roulette to Monte Carlo.
Francois and his son Camille accepted the invitation and within no time, Roulette became a hit! Francois also helped to build the first official casino in Monte Carlo, which was needed due to the huge success of the Roulette game!
French Roulette - The Casino Game of Monte CarloDue to the fact that gambling was illegal in France for many years, Casino Roulette became practically synonymous with Monte Carlo. The wealthy would take gambling vacations to Monte Carlo and enjoy gaming and relaxation on the southern border of France. Thanks to the illegality of gambling in France, the Monte Carlo casino, and Roulette, became infamous. The two grew together over the years, and were practically handed success on a silver platter! Even after gambling was legalized in France, Roulette was still mainly kept to the Monte Carlo casino! As time went on, Roulette took on two main forms, one for each side of the Atlantic. The form known as French Roulette or European Roulette has only a single zero and the percentage in favor of the house in only 2.7. This was the wheel created by the Blanc brothers. European Roulette has the largest following of players, most likely due to the fact that there is a low percentage in favor of the house.
American and European Casino RouletteAmerican Casino Roulette boasts a single and a double zero, which raises the percentage in favor of the house by an extra 2.6 percent, which means the house is up to 5.6 percent. This is considered a fairly large increase over the European version, and for that reason, has never become extremely popular.
Whether playing the popular European Casino Roulette or the less popular American Roulette, does not make a difference to the notoriety of the game. Roulette is by far one of the most popular casino games available today. It is no surprise that one of the symbols of wealth and high society is none other than that of a Roulette wheel!

Although some of its history may actually be fables that have been incorporated into the Roulette story over the years, this is what adds to the fascination and mystery surrounding the story of Casino Roulette! The history of gambling games runs the gamut from legend to myth to fairytale to folklore to historical fiction—with, possibly, a bit of truth thrown in. Because gambling has been around for centuries (a “fact” no one seems to dispute), once you go back hundreds of years to unearth roots and origins, the information is bound to get a little murky and the line between truth and fiction is inevitably going to be crossed a few times. Nonetheless, this only makes for vibrant and dynamic storytelling as befits a pastime that is more than a little colorful itself.
The Origin of the Roulette WheelThe game of roulette is a case in point. Some gambling historians claim that the game originated in ancient Rome when soldiers played by spinning chariot wheels. Others place the roots of the game “firmly” in Tibet. The bottom line is, however, that no one really knows how roulette originated, though conjecturing and hypothesizing is part of the fun. The name itself — roulette — is French and means “small wheel,” which makes it most likely that the game started out in France; the person most frequently associated with its inception is a French scientist/philosopher by the name of Blaise Pascal. While exploring the idea of perpetual motion Pascal supposedly invented the game of roulette, which very quickly moved from the laboratory to the casino.
By the early 18th century a game called RolyPoly made an appearance in England and featured a bouncing ball and a spinning wheel remarkably similar to the current roulette wheel. The betting system used in modern-day roulette was also not unlike those of a game called “Even Odd.” But France remains the true home of roulette and the French brothers, Louis and Francois Blanc, are credited with not only founding the first casino in Monte Carlo but also with creating the standard single-zero roulette wheel still used in Europe today (as opposed to the double-zero wheel used in the U.S.).
The Blanc brothers subsequently introduced their invention to the casinos and gambling halls of first France and then Germany. As gambling became successively prohibited in both those countries, the Blancs were invited to introduce their roulette wheel to that hallowed domain of legalized gambling, Monte Carlo. Some time during the 1860s, the Blancs signed an agreement with Prince Charles III of Monaco giving them permission to design and build a lavish casino in Monte Carlo. This pioneering casino, called the Casino de Monte Carlo, was built with unprecedented opulence and grandeur and was designed to attract the gambling money of the rich and famous, i.e. the European aristocracy of the time. European Roulette and American RouletteThe Blancs' version of roulette came to be known as European roulette and it remains Monte Carlo's premier gambling game. The American version of roulette — never as popular as its European counterpart — uses a double-zero roulette wheel, which lowers the odds for the player. Ironically, this type of roulette wheel is also a French invention, although European roulette is strictly played with a single-zero wheel.
Today, roulette is thought of as the king (or queen) of casino games — it is certainly the reigning monarch of gambling. Roulette — and, specifically, the roulette wheel — is an internationally recognized symbol of affluence and a high-stakes way of life. However, with the growth of Internet gambling, the allure and prestige of roulette is suddenly accessible to everyone. Roulette, the game that never quite caught on in the U.S., is now the hottest game in cyberspace.
Online RouletteThe next chapter in roulette history started with the development of the online casino in the 1990s. Online roulette was the perfect medium for the software engineers and graphic designers to show off their talents. The felt roulette table with the roulette betting grid, the spinning roulette wheel, the fall of the roulette ball into the winning pocket — all the classic elements of real casino roulette have been faithfully replicated in the virtual roulette casino.
The development of the online roulette casino gave the roulette gambler a selection of roulette games for the first time. A good online casino can offer American roulette, European roulette, French roulette, and Roulette Royale, each game just a mouse-click away. A traditional brick-and-mortar casino, on the other hand, has one roulette game; your only choice is to play or walk away.
The other advantage of internet roulette is that roulette games in remote and diverse locations can now be linked electronically. It is this technological breakthrough that allowed the development of Roulette Royale with its huge progressive jackpot.
Mobile RouletteAfter the 20th-century invention of the online casino, roulette history marched into the 21st century with the invention of the mobile casino. Where the online casino gave the convenience of playing roulette from your own home, the mobile casino gives the even greater convenience of playing roulette on the go. Anywhere you can take your mobile phone, you can take your mobile roulette casino with you. And even though the screen is smaller, the jackpots are just as big in mobile roulette.Online roulette uses the most up-to-date internet technology in a game that is ultra-modern and ultra-high tech. The game of roulette, however, has a history that goes back many hundreds of years.
