The device - a small computer - worked and, for a short while, they made big bucks in Las Vegas casinos at the roulette table. Their good run ended when the device short-circuited and burned one of the members of the Eudaemon team but, for a while, they were on a roll.
Most recently, a determined gambler by the name of Gonzalo Garcia-Pelayo gave the roulette wheel in a Spanish casino his fullest attention. Using a computer he tried to figure out which number was hit most often over a long period of time. His efforts paid off and in the mid-1990s he won over a million dollars over the course of a few years. Garcia-Pelayo is last in a long line of roulette heroes but chances are he won't be last for long.William Nelson Damborough is a well-known roulette player who won big at the beginning of the 20th century. Legend has it that Damborough was able to predict the path of the ball - and its final resting place - with only his eye and his brain. He used to place his bets incredibly quickly after the croupier had spun the wheel. Damborough cleaned up regularly in Monte Carlo before World War I, winning 64,000 pound sterling (or the Monaco equivalency) in a single month in 1910.
Thirty years before Damborough's success story, Joseph Jagger found his way into roulette history. In 1873 he hired six underlings to keep track of the winning numbers at roulette wheels in a Monte Carlo casino. Armed with this information, Jagger discovered that certain numbers hit more than others and proceeded to take the casino for over $400,000 at the roulette table. In a sense, Jagger's team was the inspiration for blackjack teams such as the MIT Team. Teamwork, Jagger understood, is the key to victory.
Joe Jagger Was the First of a Long Line of Roulette WinnersA few years after Jagger swept through Monte Carlo, another gambler by the name of Charles Wells, visited the same venue. In just two outings, Wells took the casino for over 2 million francs. He was known as the Man Who Broker the Bank at Monte Carlo and he was immortalized in a song by that name, written by Fred Gilbert.
Joe Jagger inspired the idea of teamwork and over a century after his 7-man team led him to riches, another team, called the Eudaemons tried to apply science to roulette. In the 1970s this group of University of California graduate students created a device to increase the odds of winning at roulette. Every sport has its legends; baseball has the Babe, golf has Jack Nicklaus, and basketball can boast Wilt Chamberlain. So it's not surprising that the game of roulette has its heroes, as well. They may not be as well known as Mickey Mantle or Tiger Woods but in roulette circles they are legendary, nonetheless. The tale of roulette history begins in France in 1655. The man responsible for the creation of the roulette wheel is famed mathematician Blaise Pascal. He made numerous contributions to mathematics, and is still one of history's most revered mathematical figures. Pascal's triangle is still taught in high schools around the world. There is a unit of atmospheric pressure named after Pascal. His is also the name given to one of the more popular computer programming languages.
Blaise Pascal enters gambling and roulette history in the year 1655. The roulette wheel is invented as a byproduct in his attempts to create a perpetual motion device. While his perpetual motion device will never come to fruition, roulette will live on to the present day and beyond.
Roulette's gambling potential was spotted early on. For the first nearly two centuries of its history the roulette wheel remains little changed from the original basic design created by Pascal. Then in 1842 two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc add a 0 to the numbers of the roulette wheel. There are now 37 numbers on the roulette, ranging from 0 to 36. Adding the 0 increases the house odds of winning.
There is a tale that these two Frenchmen struck a deal with the devil in exchange for the secrets of the roulette. This tale is partly inspired by the fact that if you add up all of the numbers to 36 you receive a sum of “666,” the number of the beast.
At the time that they made this addition to the roulette wheel gambling was outlawed in France. This did not stop the popularity of roulette from spreading across Europe. Francois Blanc himself established the first casinos in Monte Carlo, where roulette would become “King of Casino Games.”
Sometime during the 1800's roulette also traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. In the United States a double 0 is added for an even 38 numbers on the wheel. Sometimes in the US the 00 is replaced with an American Eagle. The development of roulette varies slightly between the American and European versionsRoulette history is hard to come by because the origin of roulette is lost, and there was likely some form of a wheel based game going back almost as far as the origin of the wheel itself. There are stories that the game was invented in China and brought to Europe by traders who were trading with the Chinese.
"Several early versions of a wheel and spinning ball were invented in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. The first games that we would recognize as modern roulette were introduced in Paris casinos around the end of the 18th century. This game contained all of the features that we have today with the one exception, the single zero was colored red while the double zero was colored black. This led to some confusion for players and the color green was introduced for the zero and double zero to alleviate the confusion.
"In the mid 19th century the single zero game was invented in France, this reduced the casino's edge thereby increasing the odds of the player. When gambling was outlawed in Germany the inventor of the single zero machine (Louis Blanc) accepted an invitation to go to Monaco to establish and operate a casino. The casino set the standards for roulette in Europe, and roulette remained exclusive to Monte Carlo until 1933. This led to the gambling and resort industry in Monaco as many of Europe's rich were attracted to the luxurious Monte Carlo casino.
"The use of the double zero roulette wheels survived in the United States and is sometimes called the American Wheel. The introduction of the single zero wheel (with better odds for the player) resulted in the demise of the double zero wheels in Europe and has become known as the French Wheel in roulette history.
"In Europe (also Atlantic City in the U.S.) the Casino's offered another refinement to the game that increased the odds yet again for the player, the option of 'En Prison' was offered. With the en prison option if the player has bet an even money bet (Even-Odd, Red-Black, 1-18 or 19-36) and zero or double zero is the next outcome the player has two options:
1. The player can 'imprison' the bet. This means the bet stays where it is and the next spin determines if the bet is lost or returned to the player. You must know this famous game! Even people, who had never been in a casino, easily recognize the green table and the wheel in lots of movies or pictures. "Placing bets", this vital part of the game, which can provide you with wealth or take all your money away is something extremely exciting and almost magical. For as long as mankind can remember, the instinct to take risks in the form of gambling has existed in us. Whether it has been playing for money, property, reputation or even life, gambling has always been a part of human nature. Roulette players come from many different backgrounds, cultures, ages. The wheel goes round and round, swirling eyes are focused on the ball, the air is filled with greed - this is unique and specific gambling environment. Never fear - the game is here! But how did it all start? Here, take a look at the history…
The game has fascinated casino patrons for almost 300 years. Although no one seems to know all of the details connected with its origin and development, some forms of the game seem to be as old as the wheel itself. There are proofs that the Roman soldiers played a similar game, by spinning wheels of their chariots, for amusement. The modern system was born in 17th or maybe 18th century. It is believed, that a famous French scientist Blaise Pascal, during his study of "perpetual motion devices", developed the rotating wheel system. Accidentally, his work was the base for "probability", which is now a big, mathematical field. The rolling device and jumping ball were first notified in the year of 1720, in the game called "Roly-poly". However the Gaming Acts of 1739 and 1740 banned that kind of game. Numerous attempts to evade these laws were made, by making innovations or changing the game name. Those innovations have been consequently outlawed in 1745. During the next 50 years, the game evolved underground into the one we would recognize today. The "modern" wheels were first noticed in Paris at the end of the 18th century, and contained all of the familiar elements that we have today, which are the alternating red and black colors, numbered pockets from 1 to 36, and two zeroes - a single one and a double one. The only major difference was that the single zero was red (although the casino barred any "red" bets from winning if 0 appeared) and the double zero was black (the same for "black" bets). To alleviate the confusion, the zeros were "green". Due to banning it all over France, the roulette has been established in New Orleans by French colonists. The game became quite popular there and it quickly started to spread all over the continent. Meanwhile, in Europe one major change has been made to the game. The two Frenchmen, innovative brothers Francois and Louis Blanc presented a new table, with one 0 only. The new single zero wheel, with a 2.70% edge instead of the double zero's 5.26% edge, was an instant hit. It decimated the competition. After few years, Louis Blanc (meanwhile Francois died) received an invitation from the king of Monaco and established the first giant, magnificent casino that sets all the standards in Europe. The single zero table was not powerful enough to overrun America and became known as the "European" type of roulette (the French roulette). Double zero survived in the United States where it became known as "the American roulette". Of course those names are not relevant to the exact situation, because both roulettes were developed in France. In Europe, the option of "En Prison" was offered, further lowering the house edge down to 1.35%! No wonder the game accounts for over 50% of revenues in European casinos as compared to about 5% in American casinos. Casinos today in Atlantic City do offer En Prison for even money bets on double zero wheels. This reduces the casinos' edge from 5.26% to 2.63% for those bets but this still is not the satisfactory edge. In Europe, the game of roulette (by the way the oldest casino game still available in casinos) now is in full bloom, generating large profits for houses of hazard. In America the game is not that much popular, but if single zero tables replace double zero ones, the previous glory might returnRoulette player maintains a truly fair, transparent and secure gaming environment towards building long-lasting relationships with our casino players.
Online roulette has a short history as it has evolved with the net, but a long history with it's relationship to the classic casino game. Roulette may be considered a soothing game in the gambling circuit. A nice slow pace tends to attract subdued and quiet, and by nature of this quality, a more civilized crowd. In Europe roulette has an association with tuxedoes and well dressed women; the air is that of grace, nobility, elegance, a million synonyms more. The exact origins of the game are not exactly known. With its popularity arising in the mid 18th century in greater Europe, some say the inventor is none other than the famed mathematician and early computer mind Blaise Pascal. If this is true, then the game has truly come full circle, as the new wave of players log on to try online roulette.
