The term "Roulette" is derived from a French word meaning small wheel. The origin of Roulette is not very clear. while some sources state that Blaise Pascal, a 17th Century French mathematician invented the roulette wheel, other sources state that the game originated in China and was brought to Europe by Dominican monks who were trading with the Chinese.
During the late 18th century the Roulette wheel became very popular when Prince Charles (ruler of Monaco at the time) introduced gambling to Monacco as a way of alleviating the financial problems of the region.
However, the modern version of the Roulette wheel did not appear until 1842 when Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc invented the single "0" roulette game. The game was eventually brought to America in the early 1800s.
However, the single "0" modification was rejected in America and the two zeros "00" where returned to the Roulette wheel. The Roulette wheel gained a great deal of popularity in America during the California Gold Rush. Since Roulette's roots are French, it is only logical that certain French terms still apply to the game. For those who are not well learned in the French language, the following is an explanation of the common French terms still used in Roulette today.
A Cheva: Split bet, meaning an inside bet, placed on the line between two numbers, covering both numbers.
Carr': Corner bet, meaning an inside bet placed at the intersection of four numbers, and covering all four numbers.
Cheval: Split bet (see A Cheva)
Colonne: Column bet, meaning an outside bet covering all 12 numbers in one of the long columns: 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36.
Croupier: Casino employee that operates the roulette table and controls the flow of the game.
En Plein: Straight up bet.
En Prison Rule: Applied to even-money bets. If the ball lands on zero, the bet is imprisoned for another spin. If the ball lands on zero during the next spin, the player loses the bet. This rule reduces the house edge by 50% on even-money bets.
La Partage Rule : Applies to even-money bets. When the ball lands on zero, the player loses half of his or her bet instead of the entire bet. This rule reduces the house edge by 50% on even-money bets.
Sixainne: (Six) line bet.
Transversale: Street bet.
