roulette wheel

roulette wheel

The tale of roulette history begins in France in 1655. The man responsible for the creation of the roulette wheel is famed mathematician Blaise Pascal. He made numerous contributions to mathematics, and is still one of history's most revered mathematical figures. Pascal's triangle is still taught in high schools around the world. There is a unit of atmospheric pressure named after Pascal. His is also the name given to one of the more popular computer programming languages.
Blaise Pascal enters gambling and roulette history in the year 1655. The roulette wheel is invented as a byproduct in his attempts to create a perpetual motion device. While his perpetual motion device will never come to fruition, roulette will live on to the present day and beyond.
Roulette's gambling potential was spotted early on. For the first nearly two centuries of its history the roulette wheel remains little changed from the original basic design created by Pascal. Then in 1842 two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc add a 0 to the numbers of the roulette wheel. There are now 37 numbers on the roulette, ranging from 0 to 36. Adding the 0 increases the house odds of winning.
There is a tale that these two Frenchmen struck a deal with the devil in exchange for the secrets of the roulette. This tale is partly inspired by the fact that if you add up all of the numbers to 36 you receive a sum of “666,” the number of the beast.
At the time that they made this addition to the roulette wheel gambling was outlawed in France. This did not stop the popularity of roulette from spreading across Europe. Francois Blanc himself established the first casinos in Monte Carlo, where roulette would become “King of Casino Games.”
Sometime during the 1800's roulette also traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. In the United States a double 0 is added for an even 38 numbers on the wheel. Sometimes in the US the 00 is replaced with an American Eagle. The development of roulette varies slightly between the American and European versions. The term "Roulette" is derived from a French word meaning small wheel. The origin of Roulette is not very clear. while some sources state that Blaise Pascal, a 17th Century French mathematician invented the roulette wheel, other sources state that the game originated in China and was brought to Europe by Dominican monks who were trading with the Chinese.
During the late 18th century the Roulette wheel became very popular when Prince Charles (ruler of Monaco at the time) introduced gambling to Monacco as a way of alleviating the financial problems of the region.
However, the modern version of the Roulette wheel did not appear until 1842 when Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc invented the single "0" roulette game. The game was eventually brought to America in the early 1800s.
However, the single "0" modification was rejected in America and the two zeros "00" where returned to the Roulette wheel. The Roulette wheel gained a great deal of popularity in America during the California Gold Rush. Did you know that Roulette means 'little wheel' in French? Neither did I, and having been informed of this fact by a friend I decided that maybe the time had come to see what else I could find out about the game; this is what I came up with…
First of all, I was quite surprised to learn that roulette is very much the baby of the casino games: Unlike poker and blackjack which have existed in one form or another for many centuries, the roulette wheel has only been frequenting the casino halls and parlors of the world since the 17th century, and it was really only the Europeans that played it until it made its' way to America in the 19th century.
The legends surrounding the creation of the roulette wheel are numerous and really quite exciting. The wheel itself was apparently created by the French mathematician Blaise Pascal. The legend goes that Pascal was experimenting in the creation of a perpetual motion device; he spent much time trying out different theories and inventions, but finally had to give up his quest. However, what he had created in the process was the roulette wheel. Whether Pascal understood the potential of his invention is unclear. We do know however that this occurred in or about the year 1657, and by the late 1700's the roulette wheel was a regular in the gambling rooms of Paris.
The roulette wheel did not receive it's distinguished red and black alternate markings until the end of the eighteenth century and until the 1840's the roulette wheel had all of the numbers that it now has, but no '0' position; this was not added until 1842. The double '00' position found on modern American Roulette wheels was not added at all to the European versions and therefore only appeared once the game had traversed the Atlantic.
Quite how the game got so popular is a subject of debate, however it is agreed that it's popularization had a lot to do with a particular French family by the name of Blanc. The Blanc brothers, Francois and Louis were there ones who originally added the '0' position making the odds better for the casino and therefore more attractive to the casino owners to feature it in their gaming rooms. It was also the Blancs that opened the first casinos in Monte Carlo where roulette flourished. Possibly because of the Monte Carlo connection roulette has been known as the 'Kings Game', and the success of Roulette in Monte Carlo is rumored to be due to Francois Blanc selling his soul to the devil in exchange for the secrets of roulette - the evidence for this pact is on the wheel itself; if you add together all of the numbers you will come up with the sum 666!The history of Roulette is difficult to determine because the origin of roulette is lost. There was likely some form of a wheel based game going back almost as far as the origin of the wheel itself. There are stories that the game was invented in China and brought to Europe by traders who were trading with the Chinese.
Several early versions of a wheel and spinning ball were invented in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. The first games that we would recognize as modern roulette were introduced in Paris casinos around the end of the 18th century. This game contained all of the features that we have today with the one exception, the single zero was red while the double zero was black. This led to some confusion for players and the color green was introduced for the zero and double zero to alleviate the confusion.
In the mid 19th century the single zero game was invented in France, this reduced the casino's edge thereby increasing the odds of the player. When gambling was outlawed in Germany the inventor of the single zero machine (Louis Blanc) accepted an invitation to go to Monaco to establish and operate a casino. The casino set the standards for roulette in Europe, and roulette remained exclusive to Monte Carlo until 1933. This led to the gambling and resort industry in Monaco as many of Europe's rich were attracted to the luxurious Monte Carlo casino.
The use of the double zero roulette wheels survived in the United States and is sometimes called the "American Wheel". The introduction of the single zero wheel (with better odds for the player) resulted in the demise of the double zero wheels in Europe and has become known as the "French Wheel" in roulette history. All roulette tables deal with only four elements:
1. The roulette wheel. 2. The roulette table (aka layout). 3. The ball. These days the ball is most likely high impact plastic, but originally it was made of ivory. Modern casinos maintain the integrity of their roulette balls with regular magnetic and xray exams. 4. The chips. Some casinos allow the player to use generic casino chips at the roulette tables, but most require the player to buy in at the table. The croupier has stacks of various colored chips. Usually each player gets a different color to help avoid confusion of bets, and the player can designate the value of the chip. This is particularly interesting because if one does not specify the chips are usually valued at either $1 or the table minimum, however if they player wished for the chips to be worth $0.25, s/he may do so as long as the ‘’’total’’’ wager meets the table minimums for their respective sectors. So even if the table minimum is $1, one could place four $0.25 bets and still be a legal.
All roulette tables operated by a casino have the same basic mechanics:
There is a balanced mechanical wheel with colored pockets separated by identical vanes and the wheel which spins freely on a supporting post. The wheel is held within a wooden frame which contains a track around the upper outer edge and blocks of a variety of designs placed approximately halfway down the face of the frame. A plastic or ivory ball is spun in the track in the frame that holds the wheel. As the ball looses momentum the centrifugal force is no longer sufficient to hold the ball in the groove and it falls down the face of the frame. As the ball hits a block it’s trajectory is randomly altered on all 3 planes (X, Y, and Z) causing the ball to bounce and skip. The ball falls onto the spinning wheel and eventually lands into one of the pockets. The number of the pocket the ball falls into determines how the bets placed on the layout table are treated.
After this the specifics of individual tables can vary greatlyYou've probably been standing in a crowd of people at a casino, watching them get tremendously excited about a little white ball speeding about the roulette wheel, and wondered how such a game was ever invited. What is the allure of roulette? Why does it have such a strange hold over people?
The word roulette is French, as you probably guessed, and it means "little wheel." It is guessed that famous French mathematician Blaise Pascal, known for his work in the field of probability, invented the device. There is no consensus however; for each person you ask, you will receive a different answer as to the origin of the roulette wheel.
The first modern roulette wheel, with its even/odd and alternating colors, was used in a Paris casino in 1796. Eventually, as with many other things, the roulette wheel was introduced to the US from the Europeans, sometime in the 1800's. The American casinos, not happy with the small edge that the house had with these European wheels, introduced the 31 pocket roulette wheel. When you hear the term "American and European wheels", this is what it refers to. The American wheel has an extra pocket, so the odds of a player winning are not as good. If you play roulette, always play with a European wheel if you wish to increase your odds of winning.
As Americans become more knowledgable about gambling and look to increase their odds of winning, we would expect that the European roulette wheel to become even more popular in American casinos. In Europe, roulette is much more popular than other games, in large part because of the better odds of winningThe first form of roulette was first devised in 17th century France, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by his fascination with perpetual motion devices. In 1842, fellow Frenchmen François and Louis Blanc added the "0" to the roulette wheel in order to increase house odds. Roulette was brought into the U.S. in the early 1800s, and again in order to increase house odds a second zero, "00", was introduced - although in some forms of early American roulette the double-zero was replaced by an American Eagle. In the 1800s, roulette spread all over both Europe and the U.S., becoming one of the most famous and most popular casino games. Some call roulette the "King of Casino Games", probably because it was associated with the glamour of the casinos in Monte Carlo. (François Blanc actually established the first casinos there).
A legend tells about François Blanc, who supposedly bargained with the devil to obtain the secrets of roulette. The legend is based on the fact that if you add up all the numbers on the roulette wheel (from 1 to 36), the resulting total is "666", which is the "Number of the Beast" and represents the devil.
Types of RouletteThere are two types of roulette, American roulette and European roulette. The difference between the two types is the number of 0's on the wheel. American roulette wheels have two "0's", zero and double-zero, which increases the house advantage to 5.3%. In European roulette there is only one zero, giving the house an advantage of 2.7%.
The two versions also use chips differently. American roulette uses so-called "non-value" chips, meaning that all chips belonging to the same player are of the same value determined at the time of the purchase, and the player cashes in the chips at the roulette table. European roulette uses standard casino chips of differing values as bets, which can make the game more confusing for both the croupier and the players.
A traditional European roulette table is also much larger than an American roulette table, and the croupier uses a long tool called a rake to clear out the chips and to distribute winnings. In American roulette the croupier collects and distributes chips by hand.
There is actually a third type of roulette wheel in use. It is a hybrid of the two versions described above, and is the only kind of wheel that is legal in the United Kingdom. This wheel has an American (English language) layout and a single zero. When a single-zero wheel is used in the United States, it is almost always this type
